Audio upgrade to dbl din... advice please

Hi.

I'm looking to start upgrading the in car audio on my 56 plate Xy.

I am looking at the Pioneer FH-P80BT dbl Din head unit. I've seen the facia plate removal guide and that coupled with the avaliabilty of wiring loom adaptors and adaptors to allow the use of the steering wheel controls suggest it will be an easy swap (famous last words!!) The only other thing is that the head unit is Blue Tooth enabled and come with a mic that needs to be located.

I am thinking that a sensible place would be at the top of the plastic trim on the windscreen pillar (near the alarm sensor) So my question is.... How will I work the cable back down to the head unit? Will I need to remove that trim or will I be able to push/pull the cable down with out removing the trim. I've seen how to remove the panel above the tweaters (not even sure if my Xy has tweaters!) I am wondering if once that is off I can feed the cable or will I need to remove the dash top storage box? If so how?

Any other advice or comments will be welcome (be gentle!)

Cheers and thanks

Jim

Being a UK owner Jim, I am not sure what a "56 plate" Xtrail is.
Could you let us know what year manufacture it is so that we can tell which model/series it is to better help you.

You posted under "Technical Problems and Solutions" and you're now viewing your post in the "Audio" section, so all is OK.

Re: Audio upgrade to dbl din... advice please

Gday mate,
Just in relation to putting a blue tooth Mic in....(no steering wheel controls for audio)
I had to remove the column trim directly in front of the drivers position. I installed the mic where the roof lining starts and the trim finishes.
I removed the drivers side glove box(?), disconnected the battery, drilled a small hole in the plastic inside the glove box and fished around until I could pull the wires through, to the open double-din head unit space.(my arm was in there)
This was a Series 1 T30 in Oz, so dunno if this will help. The more experienced guys may say "yay or nay"
 emoticon
Cheers

Hi Dave,

What was involved with getting the drivers side glove box out? and the column trim ... my big fear is making a mess of these things!

Cheers

Jim

I cant confirm your vehicle is 100% the same as mine but...to avoid a complete dash removal I ran it down the pillar, beneath the drivers side tweeter and through the glove box (with grommets). After disconnecting the battery I used a "snake" (rigid but flexible cable...if you get my drift) emoticon and fished around like crazy, via the open double din stereo pocket to pull it through....I couldnt justify the full dash removal and stress for a mic
hope this helps emoticon
