4WD Lock Mode problem

I am in the process of purchasing a 2004 Ti-L with 48,000 KLMS on the clock, and have just had an RACQ inspection carried out. The report is very positive except for one point. The inspector has written, "Unable to detect 4WD "Lock Mode" of operation on road test - check in workshop". I gave him a call and he told me that it definitely engaged in "Auto", and the 4WD indication light came on when "4WD' was engaged, but he could not be 100% sure that it was working. He did say that depending on the road condition, you may not always be able to feel it engaging. My gut feel is that if it is working in Auto, and the "4WD" light comes on when 4WD is selected, then it is most likely serviceable. Your comments / suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 4WD Lock Mode problem

Which road conditions did he test the 4WD LOCK mode on? Needless to say that wouldn't be able to tell the difference between AUTO and LOCK mode on bitumen.

Re: 4WD Lock Mode problem

Stan,

I would say that if the 4wd light comes on it is engaged but the only real way to tell is put it under load. If it comes on in Auto mode, it stands to reason it would work in lock mode.

The way to do that is to stop on a hill of reasonable slope, put the lock on and plant it. If the front wheels spin for awhile then the back wheels have not engaged. If they have the front wheels will not spin for more than a fraction of a second.

You can do this if you test drive it again mate.

Re: 4WD Lock Mode problem

Jalal,
The conditions were fine, and good road surface, and if I remember right, he said that if you put the car into a full lock, you should be able to tell if it has locked in. He did also say something about the road temp affecting this kind of test, and that it's best to do this on dirt or grass (something he could not do). How true these comments are in reality I don't know.

Jamie,
Thanks for the advice, I will take it for another drive prior to parting with any money. Like I said, my gut feel is that all is OK, and the mechanic seemed to have a certain amount of doubt given that he didn't test it on dirt or grass (see my reply to Jalal about the test content). Thanks again, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Re: 4WD Lock Mode problem

Actually it is possible to tell if 4WD engages on bitumen in LOCK mode, but it takes some keen sensory skills to detect it, and being new to the X-Trail, it's not likely you'll detect it. The engine feels more unresponsive and it doesn't take off the mark as quickly as when in AUTO or 2WD mode, and nearer to 40km/hr it feels restrictive as full torque/drive is still going to the rear wheels.

You could connect the gizmo that's been developed in this thread and that will tell you for sure emoticon
