Timing Chain - 2003 X-Trail

Hi All,

I have a question on timing chain(s) for a 2003 X-Trail. I bought my car second-hand 8 weeks ago (25th July 2008). Last Monday I noticed when you started it, it makes a grinding noise (coming somewhere from the front). It also made this noise sometimes when you put your foot on the accelerator.

29th September = Called where I bought it from (a dealer here in the ACT) and they sent me to the Nissan repairer they deal with. Booked in on the 2nd October.

2 October - Drooped car off at 8am. That afternoon they called and said it was NOT under warranty as it had travelled 5189km since bought (over the 3month / 5000km warranty). After much discussion they agreed to fix it for $900 (less than the $1800-$2000) they originally quoted. ASgreed to pay the $900 (if that is what it was). I called several other places later that afternoon and they all quoted $1500-$2000 HOWEVER all said that it would be amazing if it was the timing chain.

7th Oct – Just called Nissan service centre to find out if they have looked at the car. Conversation went something like this:

Me: Hi – I am calling to find out if you have looked at my car rego number *** *** yet?

Them: Hold on and I will check. Yes we have ordered parts and it will be ready in a few days.

Me: What parts did you order?

Them: 2 timing chains a Gasket and a Spindle.

Me: Did you look at the car to diagnose the problem?

Them: No – we just turned it on and listened to it

Me: So why do you need to replace the chains if they are not broken?

Them: I don’t know. That’s what the mechanic told me. He said they have excessive wear

Me: How does he know this if he hasn’t looked under the bonnet?

Them: He just does.

Me: Can I talk to the mechanic

Them: No sorry he is busy.

Me: Can you get him to call me?

Them : Yes. (I give them my number)

Me: Thanks. Bye

(Still waiting for that call).

So my question. Does the X-Trail have 2 timing chains? If they are not broken would you need to relace them?

I have a feeling I am being taken for a ride but I know nothing about cars and just want the bloody thing fixed.

Philippa

Hi Philippa,
I had a timing chain issue in my bluebird
My issue was only the guide and tensioner but did the chain any way because the cost was not much dearer for the chain. This was at about 320,000k's

Hi Philippa,

There is one timing chain in the xtrail and one pre-tensioner. The timing chain can get damaged if there is something wrong with the pre-tensioner which will jam the timing chain.

The Nissan mechanic or any mechanic can easily identify a damaged timing chain just by listening to it as it gets quite loud if it is indeed damaged.

Helpful details about timing chains and prices included in THIS thread.

Thanks for the replies. Will question why the mechanic ordered 2 timing chains then. I did ask and he said it needed both.

Somewhere I read about a recall on X-Trail's and timing chains. Can anyone give me more info. This is a 12/03 X-Trail with 96,000km on the clock.

There was no recall on timing chains for the xtrail. It was the crank position sensor recall we had. Please refer to the "recalls" section of the forum for details.
