T31 M9R diesel oil

Hi guys,

I thought I would fill you in on the oil you should be using in the new T31 Diesel xtrail. It seems this puppy is pretty sensitive to the type of oil you should run.

The oil Nissan are running as their factory option is the Shell Helix Ultra Extra. It is a 5W30 oil, that is particularly suited to vehicles with a diesel particulate filter.

Now don't cry, but it is a little exy. Repco had it on sale for $79.99 for 5L. The dealer was asking about $85 for the same amount. Trade price is a little cheaper and makes it a little more bearable.

From the research i have done, it appears there is little choice in Aus for the correct type of oil.

Doesn't Castrol have a suitable engine oil for the diesel?

EDIT: Just checked the Castrol website and you can get Castrol Edge 5W30 for the T31 exy which is excllent and cheaper than Shell.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

There is a Castrol product that suits. It is called "Castrol SLX Professional OE." The Castrol Edge oil does not fulfil the requirements for this motor. I am not sure where you can get this SLX Pro OE from.

The M9R requires an oil that has an ACEA rating of C3, which castrol edge doesnt have. It also requires a low ash oil.

I reckon you should call Castrol and get this clarified regarding the Castrol Edge oil because if I go by the following explanations of the diesel grade oils, it meets the requirements.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Oils are annoying.

ok, from the research I have done, the explanation above is not entirely accurate.

A ratings refer to petrol engines. B ratings refer to diesel applications and C ratings refer to both petrol and diesel ratings that correspond to both A5 and B5 ratings as you suggest. The 5 refers to both high performance/long drain(A3,B3), direct injection diesel(B4) and fuel economy variants(A1,B1). The difference being:
C1- Petrol and Light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5 low Sulphated Ash Phosphorous Sulphur, two way catalyst compatible.
C2- Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
C3- Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible, Higher performance levels due to higher HTHS.

In short, an oil rated at A3 and B3 does not mean it complies with C3. However, a C1,C2,C3 oil meets A3, B3, B4, A1 and B1 specs. The difference between C1,C2,C3 is to do with ash content and HTHS ratings (high temp, high shear). A C3 oil is the only one that has an HTHS rating.

Castrol Edge is compatable with A1,B1,A2,B2,A3,B3,B4-but it doesn't have a SAPS rating or an HTHS rating which means it isn't a C compatible oil

The M9R engine requires not only a C3 rating, it also requires an HTHS rating of 3.5 and low ash content.

Aaron

Nissan now have "Nissan Genuine Oil" available for the x-trail diesel, it is a bit cheaper than the castrol they were initially selling me. I have to specify it though at service time.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Hi guys, I'd like a bit of feedback here if possible - I may be worrying unnecessarily.

Just picked up my T31 TS Manual diesel after its 10,000km service today (over 3 hours later than the promised time - but that's another story).

Last service (at 5000kms - because I'd done a fair bit of towing plus I usually "over-service" at the start of a vehicle's life) the invoice showed they filled it with 7.0 litres of "MOBIL-1 ESP 5W/30 (Diesel Oil 5W30)". This C3 oil matches the specs ppl have mentioned in previous postings, and Nissan's specs for this engine. Price was $16.80 per litre - also in keeping with other posts.

But this time the invoice indicates 7.4 litres of "SYNTEC ELITE 5W/40 (Oil Diesel)" has been used. 5W/40 is not the grade mentioned in the Specs for the M9R. They only charged me $8.00 per litre, too.

When I paid the bill I raised my concerns with the guy at the service desk, and mentioned the need for a low ash (C3) oil in the M9R and he assured me that "it's a new oil, just out. It's the right one for the diesel".

I've certainly never heard of this particular oil (which is probably not surprising if indeed it IS a newly released, and cheaper, C3 oil). The sticker on the windscreen (both times) was a Mobil sticker, and this dealership says they use only Mobil oils. I've done a fairly comprehensive Google search and can't find anything from Mobil that matches. I found reference to a Royal Lubricants oil called Syntec Elite (5W/40) - but that one is for a petrol engine.

What do you think? Am I just being paranoid? The last thing I want is a clogged DPF due to the wrong oil being used accidentally. The Service Dept at the dealership is closed till Monday so I can't speak to someone higher up the tree till then.

Comments gratefully received!

Cheers,

Jeff.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Jeff,
It could be a honest mistake with it being a click of the mouse that he has put he wrong oil down but the SYNTEC ELITE 5W/40 seems to be a fleet oil that is a common practice to keep one oil for all in bulk and a lesser amount in a slightly better oil for the customers that ask for it. In saying that they have given you a Diesel compliant oil of a high standard and all should be good it has a low viscosity to get the oil around the engine quickly and also give good fuel economy and the higher load carrying towing temp side in the 40 as most diesel oil are it's a SM/CF oil that's fine

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the feedback.

My concern wasn't the thicker 5W-40 rather than the 5W-30 that Nissan recommends in the manual. As you say a 5 for startup and a 40 when hot is probably not a bad move in a diesel in Australian conditions.

However the M9R diesel engine in the T31 X-Trail has a fairly sophisticated (and new) EC combination of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and a catalytic converter. The oil MUST be an ACEA C3 oil (law SAPS, HTHS) and Nissan warns specifically that an A3 or B3 oil, EVEN IF it is a "diesel recommended" spec oil, may not be used in this engine. My search on the Web could not locate any info on SYNTEC ELITE 5W-40 - particularly not on the Mobil site which is what the guy on the desk told me had been used.

Out of time at the moment, but I have an interesting follow-up posting to make about what has transpired over the last two weeks on this matter....it will be of interest to many M9R owners I think.

Thanks again for your speedy response Dave.

Jeff.
