Re: Hunter Range Trip - 1st of Nov 2008

Hey Tony,

I'm not sure about the GPS coords....I just copied them out of the book.

As for the weather, I agree 100% about the wet. The thing is, I don't think it will be that wet. In the past three days, Putty and Howes Valley (the 2 weather stations in the area we are heading) have had less than 5mm rain. If you compare this to the period before Zhivan went up a couple of weeks ago (where they had over 20mm) and he though the grip standard was OK.

It's going to be 34 degrees up there tomorrow, so the clay will be baking hard. The rain models show falls moving from the west towards the ranges by Saturday evening, with some drizzle on the coastal fringe.

All in all, as Jalal said, each member should make a choice as to whether they will attend or not. Unless the forecast changes, I will be heading up. I'm really happy for people to make their own mind up as to whether they will attend or not. There'll always be another trip!!

Dave and all
Reconfigured the GPS and the co-ordinates are in degrees and minutes, not degrees, minutes, seconds.

Re: Hunter Range Trip - 1st of Nov 2008

Hi Dave, and all,

Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated. Read (and re-read) all of the threads and I'm in two minds as to what to do. I've been over some fairly rough sections of track doing some of the other Boiling Billy treks and have never had a problem, but it has always been dry. I'd really love to attend but I'm conscious that the worst section when wet may be the last section which also seems to be the part that is most likely to be wet if the showers arrive later in the day as forecast. I think I'll check the forecast and the forum again tonight and make a decision then.

Re: Hunter Range Trip - 1st of Nov 2008

G'day all,

I am still in however might consider going in my mate's car with mud tyres as I only have the standard rubber. Looking at the weather report and rainfall in the last couple of days the area has received small amounts of rainfall which shouldn't have affected the track too badly.

My concern is with the accuracy of the weather forecast for Saturday. If the weather turns nasty e.g turns into constant showers it may be difficult and potentially dangerous on standard rubber to negotiate the clay based inclines and declines that have the potential to turn slippery.

I have no doubt that the car would make it through but don't want to risk getting into a slide that is not controllable and then beat myself up due to the consequences (just being perfectly honest here).

My mates car has mud tyres and a full compliment of recover gear. The guy is also an automotive/marine mechanic which is very handy.

I will bring my GPS with the whole track that I did last time pre-loaded. I will log into this site tonight to see what the general consensus is.

Re: Hunter Range Trip - 1st of Nov 2008

Hey guys.

Not sure if I can still make it, as I have work committments. However, I will know tonight.

I see a few are concerned about the weather, so if I come, I will most likely bring the Patrol, so we have a recovery vehicle just in case. emoticon

Just be mindful, that in the mud, you MUST get your tyre pressures down to the low 20's to get that important traction.

Hopefully, see you all there.

Hi all

Still will be going if not cancelled

May have a mate coming with Land Cruiser

He has H/T tyres as has my Xtrail

Had practice at Lake Eucumbene last weekend had fun found the wet/mud challenging/difficult but got through unscaved

Rain is the only concern on the day, but will meet up and then make decision

Re: Hunter Range Trip - 1st of Nov 2008

OK, I have just consulted with the Bureau and the forecast for the Northern Central Tablelands is for a chance of drizzle in the east, but mostly fine in the remainder. It was in the low 30's there today and the region has had no rain in the past 24 hours. The roads will be pretty dry.

Specific forecasts for Saturday:

Mudgee : Fine. Partly cloudy. Min: 13 Max: 24
Katoomba : Chance shower/drizzle. Min: 12 Max: 15
Lithgow: Chance shower/drizzle. Min: 11 Max: 17

Mudgee and Lithgow are the closest towns to where we will be driving, so this forecast is more positive than it has been. The showers are going to be more coastal. Any that make the ranges should be light.

I am a definate starter. I'm off to pack the Exy and pick up the chainy. There were 60 kph winds up there today, so we might have some trees to deal with!

See you at the Putty turn off....8am for a departure at 8:30 sharp
