Re: Very Rough Idling

Glenn, if the problem was there before the head gasket was replaced, I wonder if it's possible it was 1 tooth out from factory? It's common practice to either mark the timing chain or cable-tie it in place onto the gear sprocket/cog, so I would doubt it was caused by the mechanic that replaced the head gasket, but in saying that, I would think it would be 1 in more than a million chance of being incorrectly assembled from the factory!!!

Dan, off-topic, but the other items you chose not to get done by the dealership can be done alot cheaper elsewhere. I know you can get "split" CV boots which don't require the removal of the drive shaft to install them, and would be much cheaper option than the price Nissan quoted! You could do two X-Trails front and back for the price Nissan quoted for the rear pads!!! I'd be changing both rotors and not just one, again alot cheaper than Nissan's price - it's easier to change a rotor than it is to change the pads! If you're handy with the tools you could easily save yourself a few hundred $$$ on Nissan's labour costs!

Hi Rich

I hadn't considered it may have been incorrectly assembled at the factory - as you say pretty unlikely but possible nonetheless. I guess it's one of those things that's pretty much impossible to say with certainty.

Re: Very Rough Idling

hmm this is all very odd. it could well have been the mechanic but i doubt a factory defect (it would have been picked up at a dealership, you drive those cars all day you can pick if somethings not right straight away). im also wondering if the problem could be balance shaft related? what with the car rocking back and forth. having the exhaust side one tooth out is alot of degrees out because its chain and not belt. id think it would be misfiring/backfiring if that were the case

Re: Very Rough Idling

Dan.
It may be time for a trade up to a2009 model. Mine is 02 and 125000k and I have idle issues , bad starts, and my mechanic found that 1 spark plug was corroded, so did tests and found some gas residue in the radiator; have possible head issues now which can cost $3000. Also the original exhaust is ready to die; extra $3000.So Iam in the process of changeover. Check out the other areas of this site to check out your options.
Best of luck.

Hello Dan

The garage mentioned - Exhaust Cam out by one tooth. I'm having a simliar post head gasket idle issue. Did this turn out to be the problem and did it fix the idle problem ?

Re: Very Rough Idling

Yes - this definitely fixed the idle problem. It cost me a bit to fix though.
