T31 Towbar Wiring

Hi,
When I was installing my reverse camera (other post) I discovered that there was no reversing light wire installed in the Nissan fitted towbar and wiring assembly which was installed from new. I went to the dealer to enquire and found out that according to the guy that does the wiring that it is not uncommon to have this wiring missing and not just on Nissan products. How many people "think" they have reverse light function in their exy's trailer socket?

Re: T31 Towbar Wiring

Hi xtrail virgin, not many would think that as a 5 pin uses all 5 pins,ie Stop light, tail light, left hand, right hand winkers, earth. A 7 pin uses all of the above plus a hot wire for (caravans fridges) and a brake light wire for the electric brakes. These settings are for the round type plugs. Flat type have up to 12 connections.
Hope this helps emoticon

posticon Re: T31 Towbar Wiring

Thanks bobtaus but according to my google searches the 7 pin flat uses all the 5 pin connections with the extra 2 being the reverse light and as you say electric brakes. I think the hot wire is in the 12 pin versions. My point was that if I am getting a factory install with supplied 7 pin flat connector then I would expect that all the pins are actually used not the 6 that were with the exception of the reverse light. To make it more comical the service manager first off said that I didn't need it anyway and when I pointed out "well why is it in the socket" he changed his tune and was somewhat more helpfull. I sometimes wonder if these guys really believe the dribble they come out with at times.

I'm also a bit surprised by their answer.

With the reverse lights of the T31 being so low in the bumper, how do they expect you to warn others than you're reversing if you have trailer behind? emoticon

Re: T31 Towbar Wiring

What more can I say? When I installed the reverse camera I ran a wire to the trailer socket and fixed it. This was the same service manager that said if I fitted a K&N air filter that it may void my warranty, the reason being that the filter might not be as good as the factory one. What a joke.
