Re: T31 Rear Bumper acts as a sand scoop!

I gave the underside of my bumper the chop with my Dremel last night. I might go back and remove more material on the weekend. I always find large rocks stuck in the bumper after trips through the bush. I haven't been able to visualise a bash plate for the rear as yet, when I do I might commission an alloy engineering shop to put something together.

Woohoooooooooo emoticon

Experienced the wonderful sand scoop problem on the weekend, two nice big splits up the back of the bumper, trailer wiring hanging out, lower part of bumper split in the middle.

Anyone have an idea what a new bumper is worth?

As soon as I saw the result I remembered this thread and thinking I should really do that seeing as mine sees trips to the beach.

Cannot for the life of me think where it would have happened, had a nice run up the beach with no real hard work (ABS light did rear its ugly head while in Auto but didn't switch back to 2wd so that was good).

Sorry to hear that you damaged your bumper I'd say that the cost of replacement is probably going to be more than your insurance excess once you factor in the painting. How bad is it? Have you got any pics?

Re: T31 Rear Bumper acts as a sand scoop!

I have no idea why Nissan decided to design the rear bumper of the T31 so low, given the fact that they have concentrated so much on giving the T31 more off-road ability, ground clearance should have been their main objective and by solving the problem of the monster muffler in the T30 they seem to have introduced a new problem which now the lowest point on the T31 and that is the rear bumper!

The only thing I can visualize at this moment to solve the T31 problem is almost a wrap around bash plate for the rear bumper that comes from the bottom edge and goes all the way to the top lip of the bumper to help shield it from impacts, but would look plain ugly unless it is a nice a shiny bash plate.

Yeah Jalal that is what I was thinking, polished alloy wouldn't be bad emoticon

Good ol cable ties are holding it back up now. Due to it being rooted I might look at what can be done making a bash plate for it. Maybe when the house reno's are over I might be able to put some energy into it.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper acts as a sand scoop!

I'll get my head under one of the T31s on Saturday during our trip and will see what points be used to secure a bash plate under there so we can have a better idea what to design.

The only type of rear protection (if I can call it that) that was ever produced for the T30 was sort of a rear bumper garnish, but I reckon it is more of cosmetic thing and the T31 needs a full rear body armor by the sounds of it.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper acts as a sand scoop!

Hi Guys,

JAOS Japan have launched some sort of a protector bar for the under-carriage straight under the rear bumper and I wonder if this will protect the lower lip of the bumper from getting snapped, as this bar seems to sit lower than the bottom edge of the bumper and certainly looks solid by the way it is attached to the chassis.

Let me know what you think and I can find out more details about it from JAOS.

Looks like it would certainly help. It would reduce the chance of damaging the bumper on rocks dramatically but might not prevent damage from sand if you're in deep.

It is good to be able to see where they attach it to though as these points could also be used for fixing a protective plate......just got to find 2 more towards the front now.

Re: T31 Rear Bumper acts as a sand scoop!

Looking at this bar, I reckon it'll even be a good attachment point for a bash plate if the bash plate is designed with such a bar in it and then we gonna have to work out a way to get around the low hanging spare wheel well and probably have another bar towards the front of the car where it can be attached to the chassis. The rear bash plate would almost certainly would have to come-up and grab the rear bumper using the holes that are there, so the rear bumper becomes part of the bash plate and will be much stronger.

It would certainly reduce your ground clearance, but will provide the needed protection for the rear bumper as well as that spare wheel well which in my opinion is overly exposed.

Here is what I roughly have in mind:
