posticon Fire Extinguisher

Hey Extrailers,

Where is the best location to mount or carry a fire extinguisher in an Exy.

Being without one in a time of need would be more than frustrating, sad and disturbing.
The little 0.9 kg extinguishers are on sale at that place that used to be BBC, for less than $20, Bargin.

Re: Fire Extinguisher

The one I had in my previous cars I screwed the holder to the floor directly infront of the passenger's seat so the extinguisher was easy to reach from the driver's seat if needed.

I have not fixed it into the Xtrail yet but it will probably be in the same place.

A very important addition for sure, I think I'll do the same Kev and the bracket can be screwed directly to the floor.

Re: Fire Extinguisher

Thanks Kev,

I got an extinguisher today and it will fit almost perfectly on the front of the ridge at the rear of the front passenger foot well. As soon as I get some screws (none in the box) I'll mount it and attempt at posting a photo.

Re: Fire Extinguisher

I have just screwed mine into the front of the hump that runs under the front of the driver's seat.

The hump on the passenger's side was looked at but the length of flat surface of the passenger side was too short for mine.

Hi everyone,
The reason I have not fitted one yet I was told many moons ago by my insurance company that if the car caught fire and there was one installed and the extinguisher was not used that they could void the insurance.
So I would like your views!

Regards Scot & Wendy emoticon

Normally they give a discount if you have one fitted as the possibility that the fire could be put out before too much damage is higher.

Ofcourse, there could be times when you may not be in or near your car when the fire starts and in this case how could you use the extinguisher emoticon

I would go to a different insurance company or atleast ask for their reason.

Re: Fire Extinguisher

I wanted to fit a small 1KG extinguisher, having done a search I found this thread, and have added my solution, as I did not want go with fitting it to the floor as it would be a pain and would not move when the seat was moved.

I had a look under the seat, there was a small bracket under the seat, but could it hold a fire extinguisher ? My SVE is fitted with heated seats, so the bracket is there for the loom. I do not know if the threaded holes are standard to the seat base for non heated seats.

Image

Oh well there was only one way to find out ... I unclipped the wire loom for heated seat, you will need pliers for this, long nose are better I found. Then using a stubby Phillps (PH2) I undid the screws and put them to one side for thread comparison.

Image

Threaded holes, mmm ok time do go to the workshop. After digging around I found suitable fixings and metal. I spent about an hour putting it to together.

Image

The fiddly bit was adjusting the braket and backing plate to fit. Once done it fitted a treat, but with extinguisher in it wobbled badly, I figured it would not last long. Time to build something a bit more heavy duty

Image

I had planned to put the extinguisher on the passenger side, however as I only had the seat location to use and one unit to fit I went for the drivers side fitting, the bonus would be the Trailboss would not loose bag space

Tools:
Can of primer ( brush or spray on )
Can of Simoniz Black spray (Prefered choice but Unipart would do)
Long nose pliers
Stubby Phillips (PH2) screwdrivers
PH2 5" Screwdriver
12" Hacksaw (18" or 24" TPI blade)
Hand file (Engineers or 2nd Cut)
Cordless drill
Flat bladed screwdriver
10mm Spanner or long reach socket ( and ratchet )
3 mm steel or wood drill bit

I used a variety of fixings all stainless, purchased locally in a Marine Chandlers where they still sell fixings one at time.
6mm x 16mm Pan head set screws x 3
6mm Penny washers x 3
6mm Nylock nuts x 3
Pan head self tap 2 x 15 mm long thread 2 x 40mm long
Unfortunately I am not sure what gauge they are, but that is the same as the OE screws
5mm Penny washers x 4 for the screws

Having rummaged in my box of off cuts the best material seemed to be some Dexion 225 left over from a Land Rover project

Image

I cut off a 200mm length the Dexion, I did a quick check on the under side of the seat and found there would be issues with the loom coming out of the underside of the seat.

Image

Once I had primed the steel I cut off a 35mm section off. I then rounded the sides and corners. After further cutting off of a 65mm section off the other end. It should look like this

Image

Note the top, the section that goes under the seat is at the top so you are looking at from the front. I made use of the Dexion's shape make the cuts and keep rounded corners. Eventually I gave a it a further coat of paint.

Fit the bracket and extinguisher holder together using the set screws, and nylocs. Put the washers on the Dexion side. Use screwdriver and spanner to do up hand tight. You will note the upper part of the bracket is off set from the center of the the extinguisher holder center. You will see this more clearly in a couple of pictures, this allows room for the seat adjust handle.

Image

I then I made a spacer out of wood. I used 1 1/2" x 3/4" x 4" offcut, marked it out. The two outside holes were drilled half way through, the two inner holes were drilled all the way through using the original bracket as the template for the holes. Try and keep the drill straight. Check the otherside against the original bracket.

Screw in the outer screws with washers, and then fit long screws and washers. Ensure you screw them through then back them off so they just protude, about a mill. I filed the points down of the long screws to match the originals.

Image

Now comes the really tricky bit, and where a second pair of hands would help, I did not have that as I wanted to check it all worked. You need to hold the bracket up against the underside of the seat so that when you do the screws up the spacer stays flush to the surface. Of course with your other hand you need to then locate the screw head and then do up the screws with the stubby. It took me a couple of goes, but job done

Image

Two things that struck me, the handle is door side but does not appear to get in the way, this would mean turning it around if it became an issue. The other thing was and only time will tell, are the stainless screws strong or threaded holes enough ?

All the usual caveats apply regarding modifying. Feel free to us as long as it not for commercial use, no warranty implied or inferred.
