It has always worked reasonably well as far as a xtrail does. It was running fine 2 weeks ago in a long trip and then I had underbody work done. Rear shocks new lower control arms and front bearings. A couple days after I took it for a run down the beach and now my cruise control is all over the place. I set it on a hundred and it runs for a bit then starts taking off and speeding right up. Has anyone had issues like this before?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ihavenoidea)Sun, 03 Apr 2022 12:45:53 +0000 Re: T31 Cruise control issueshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098882,from=rss#post2098882https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098882,from=rss#post2098882Hi Anna, I've driven around 22,000km on my T31 in the last year, and have spent comfortably at least half of that in cruise control (highway driving to work), and this has happened 3 times in the last couple of months, 2 of which I can confirm was when I hit a bump in the road at a weird angle. In my case, it looks like my Dual Mass Flywheel is going, and a post I read somewhere indicated that a momentary difference between engine speed and gearbox speed could cause this (because of the DMF 'flapping'). Obviously if you have an auto, this is not the case. A more likely possibility could be what a colleague encountered on his '15 Forrester - the spring on his brake pedal was getting old, and bumps in the road would cause it to move just enough to disengage CC (similar to a light tap on the brake, instead of hitting 'Cancel' on the steering wheel). This is maybe something worth checking out? Either way, it's probably not something I'd lose sleep over, since it doesn't sound like it happens a lot, and when it does happen, there is a known factor (bumps), even if the cause is not 100% clear.nondisclosed_email@example.com (roelofs)Fri, 08 Oct 2021 12:14:19 +0000 Re: T31 Cruise control issueshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098637,from=rss#post2098637https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098637,from=rss#post2098637quote:Nickelass wrote: My guess, it's the computer going, "nah I reckon we about to crash/get some air, i'm out, good luck human! I've had this happen in my T31 twice on trip up the Snowy Mountains Highway and also in my old Volvo (similar vintage) a few times. In the case of the Volvo the manual makes it clear that if the car detects a sudden shift in steering angle, car pitch/angle and so on, the cruise control will disengage the cruise but not switch off the system totally so you can 'resume' the cruise. There is this place that I regularly travelled a few years back, every-time like clockwork I went past this spot heading east with the cruise on, it would suddenly disengage. You can see it doesn't look like much, but for some reason this part of the road always did it. It sits at the speed I set it at immediately. The lever/button on the steering wheel quickly speeds up or slows down the car. Sometimes my speed may increase slightly when going down hill, but I can just turn off cruise until I get to the bottom of the hill. When going up a hill, the revs are quite low, so I make sure to give a little boost with the accelerator just before the hill to get the revs up and then the CC speed will be maintained up the hill. Sorry Guys, False alarm. The service manager called Nissan Australia and they have confirmed that ALL Series 3 and Series 4 X-TRAILs already have the latest ECU software version and the cruise control should be working within 5km/hour difference which is within the allowable tolerance. They have also confirmed that the excess speed I was getting on the run downhill is normal behavior of the CVT which can only slow the car so much using the gearing ratio, so am glad to hear its normal.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Thu, 25 Aug 2011 14:55:04 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055759,from=rss#post2055759https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055759,from=rss#post2055759Drooped the car off at the dealer today to have the sat nav unit replaced and asked if there was a software update for the Series 3/4 T31 xtrails to fix cruise control problems. I agree - the T31 cruise doesn't react quickly enough at the start of a descent and does add a little to the initial increase in speed. Most irksome. It doesn't drive the car to many kms/h over the set speed though. Hard to believe Nissan with it's incredible technology/research and experience, hasn't given the Xy a perfect cruise control. It really doesn't even match older cars. I'm sure it's something to do with the electronic throttle and Drive-by-wire system and associated "not fast enough" computing power. With CVT braking remember: Brake pads $100 or so occasionally. CVT eventual repair $9,000+. As my driving instructor told me - "Gear box for going, Brakes for slowing" unless you are in a brake overheating situation like a really long and steep descent whilst towing. Otherwise brakes are much preferred as they are designed to slow and stop the car. Don't really understand why so many people use expensive transmission/drive train components to slow when brakes are cheap and designed for the job. Be aware - ALL CVT power/retard goes via this: I'm making this belt's life as easy as possible as I would love it to actually last some 300,000kms nondisclosed_email@example.com (Translucidus)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 22:38:59 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055550,from=rss#post2055550https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055550,from=rss#post2055550What I found was that speed started to increase going downhill, cancelling cruise resulted in less speed increase. The software uograde was done last year and did seem to help in speed holding on level and uphill but not downhill. Flicking the CVT into manual will give plenty of engine braking, I generally do that prior to using brakes.nondisclosed_email@example.com (BarneyB)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 22:04:58 +0000 Re: T31 Cruise control issueshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055547,from=rss#post2055547https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055547,from=rss#post2055547I would say your aftermarket cruise on your T30 was also doing nothing to reduce downhill speed - apart from having a closed throttle when speed over the set speed (which one would hope the T31 would also be doing). Cruise controls can do NOTHING to reduce overun speed downhill because they only control throttle opening - unless you have a very sophisticated car in which the cruise can also brake (not T31 that's for sure) The better T30 downhill retarding would have been an artifact of the gearing, over-run system and torque converter characteristics of the transmission fitted - and/or greater aero and mechanical drag. The T31 appears much slipperier aerodynamically than the T30 and is also a low friction (mechanically) design. A good way to test aero and general drag characteristics is to freewheel downhill and compare speeds/times when you change something eg add roof racks, add nudge-bar, change cars. The T31 is obviously better than your T30 in this regard as when going downhill, any cruise control is inactive whilst car is over set speed. I also suspect the CVT only allows a little retarding force to preserve durability of the belt drive acting opposite to drive.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Translucidus)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:45:30 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055546,from=rss#post2055546https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055546,from=rss#post2055546I know the T31 cruise is NOT increasing the speed of the car, but it is doing nothing to try and maintain the set speed downhill.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:41:33 +0000 Re: T31 Cruise control issueshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055545,from=rss#post2055545https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055545,from=rss#post2055545Jalal the engine braking via CVT is gentle and retards only a little. You'll get used to it. Brake to slow as necessary downhill (which disengages cruise) and re-engage cruise when appropriate. The cruise is NOT increasing your speed downhill - the CVT is retarding a little within it's design parameters (as shown by rev increase). The T31 CVT is entirely different from an auto T30 and your experiencing change; not error. No dealer will try and correct this normal behaviour.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Translucidus)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:37:25 +0000 Re: T31 Cruise control issueshttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055543,from=rss#post2055543https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055543,from=rss#post2055543Hey BarneyB, I notice you have a 2008 model. Mine is also an early T31 CVT and on request the dealer can apply a firmware patch to correct some cruise control issues such as you have described. I had the patch applied and cruise was much better. When speed increases downhill I just use the speed slowing device (brakes). I must admit though, the Xy cruise control is not as precise as other cars I have driven. Possibly an artifact of Drive-by-Wire system used which has other issues too such as a halting acceleration on partial throttle or cornering sometimes. Other cars with DBWire also have same issues from what I have heard.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Translucidus)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:30:40 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055542,from=rss#post2055542https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055542,from=rss#post2055542Well, that is obviously VERY different to the after-market cruise control I had in my T30 which would maintain the speed at the same section of the road. The T31 didn't feel like it was engine braking at all, it was just gliding down that hill and picking-up speed. I reckon I would have gotten to 130kms/hour (from the set 110kms/hour) at the bottom of that hill. Maybe it's normal for the T31 cruise behavior, but I am not used to it based on the way it used to work in the T30. This means am gonna have to disengage the T31 cruise at every steep downhill run. At least it is working perfectly uphill, which wasn't that perfect in the T30 in terms of gear hunting. Can't get everything nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:30:08 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055540,from=rss#post2055540https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055540,from=rss#post2055540During my recent 7500k 3 week trip I used the cruise control quite a bit, generally very good on level or climbing grades but was over running downhill. I found that disengaging cruise at the crest gave much better results except on the steepest grades when engine or CVT braking was required. Given these results I believe there is a fault with the programming of the cruise control part of the ECU.nondisclosed_email@example.com (BarneyB)Wed, 17 Aug 2011 21:07:01 +0000 Re: Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055539,from=rss#post2055539https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2055539,from=rss#post2055539quote:jalalski wrote: The over-speed happened at the run down the hill. The cruise can't decelerate the car as it doesn't access the brakes!!! The CVT would have lowered it's ratios for a little engine braking - you probably saw the engine revs increase as you gathered speed downhill; but that's the CVT lowering ratio to invoke engine braking. NOTHING to do with cruise control (which would at the time, have been requesting zero throttle.) You car was just overunning normally with some engine braking (invoked by the ECM and a tilt sensor which detects down/up-hill) We are actually lucky the X-Trail can automatically engine brake a little (it's not agressive braking) - most cars don't do this. There have been a few posts here about revs increasing with zero throttle and on a downhill slope - that's engine braking, NOT power to the wheels from throttle opening. There isn't a single vehicle I know of except for the Mercedes S Class that activates it's own brakes to maintain speed on a reasonable decent under cruise control. In fact the Xtrail's cruise control works far better than my Falcon use to, also better than the Commodore ute and the Rodeo which we have at work.
