Space saver spare wheel

Does anyone know if a space-saver spare wheel is avaliable for the xtrail in Australia ?

If you convert to gas, and want to preserve boot space, it would seem a smart idea.

I don't think there is any for the xtrail Geoff, but even with space-saver spare, there won't be enough room for it in the boot with the LPG tank.

Re: Space saver spare wheel

It would be worth scouring the net and/or contacting Nissan to see if there is another Nissan vehicle that has the same stud pattern and suitable offset has a space-saver as a spare wheel. I know my N15 Pulsar had the same wheel stud pattern as the bluebird (I think U13 was the model of the bluebird) and I picked up a space-saver from one of them which I found for $150 at a local wreckers/spares place.

Something you'll need to be aware of was a problem I discovered when I went to use it: the wheel/tyre rolling diameter was different to my other wheels (as the space-saver was not specifically designed and issued for the Pulsar), and because of that, the car sat very unusually on the road (the rear mudflap was almost scraping on the road!) and also it didn't fit over the front wheel brake caliper (yes, I found this out the hard way, and at midnight), but it did fit on the back so I swapped the front & back wheels to get home (they are 80kph speed limited, and I was on the M5!).

Re: Space saver spare wheel

The Nissan Murano does come with a space-saver, but it is meant to suit 18" alloys that the Murano has. Geoff is looking for a 15" space-saver I believe.

With all the limitations and risks involved with carrying a space-saver spare, I'd rather put up with the extra weight of a full-sized spare tyre that I know will get me out of trouble no matter where I am.

HERE is an article about the dangers of space-savers.

So does that mean the Murano space-saver & tyre combo has the same rolling diameter as the factory-fitted 18inch alloys that come as standard with the Murano? If it is smaller, then it may be nearer to the rolling diameter as the X-Trail. I know you would've fitted smaller profile tyres to your Murano rims than what would've been fitted to them if they were on a Murano, to keep nearer to the X-Trail's factory alloy's rolling diameter.

The chance of a spare being used is minimal. Since fitting BFG's I've never had a flat or puncture, and today was the first time in 3-4 years I've had to use the spare on my work car. In the last 15 years of driving, I've only had to use the spare wheel 3 times, but that's not implying that everyone else has experienced the same situation as me; others could be more, others less.

Re: Space saver spare wheel

Yes Rich, it means that the Murano space-saver is the same rolling diameter at the supplied 18" rims and tyres it comes with and will not suit the xtrail, apart from the fact that the stud and bolt pattern in the same.

While you can compensate with full size tyres to match-up the rolling diameter when fitting 18" alloys, I don't think you can do that with the space-saver, as you won't be able to find a tyre in that size to suit the exy.

As for the number of time getting a flat tyre, it doesn't matter, what matters is WHERE you could get a flat tyre and how far the space-saver can take you to a spot where you can have the full size flat tyre fixed. One flat tyre in the bush is more than enough to make your weight saving quest a disaster.

And likewise, a rolled tyre off a rim at the beach isn't going to be suitably replaced by a space-saver spare wheel, which are like cheese-cutters, and would slice through the sand, no matter what you dropped the pressure down to! emoticon

Re: Space saver spare wheel

I dont want to get bogged down on a discussion on the merits of space savers.

Like Rich said, the chances of a flat in normal city driving these days are very small. I've never had one in the xtrail, and cant remember one in prior cars.

With a gas conversion, your spare wheel well is gone, but a thin space-saver mounted vertically in the back of the trail could give you more room... which you could use in emergencies around town.

If you go off road, or long distance, you throw your normal spare in instead.

Geoff,

The solution for the spare tyre combined with an LPG system has already been covered-off HERE

You don't need a space-saver to achieve this.

I dont think having a great stonking big tyre and wheel in your back area is very "space saving".

Its not about weight, handling, braking, or looks. My goal is to maximize space to the extreme.
