Re: Engine Mounts

LOL Kev, that was a joke I reckon, as the coins in my coin box shake too with the factory engine mounts LOL emoticon As long as nothing else shakes, I reckon we should wait and see what confirmed reports come back with emoticon

Re: Engine Mounts

Just had both Front and rear mounts replaced. Symptons were a MASSIVE vibration, when vehicle stopped and in Drive. Couldnt even contemplate putting aircon on (whilst stopped), as this dramatically increased the vibration.
While moving, even at low speed, the vibration disappeared, and it didnt happen in Neutral,Park or Reverse.
Put car up on ramps, got Tara (very trusting!) to stand on brake and put it in drive, aircon on. I could completely remove vibration by pulling down lightly on rear driveshaft, or even pressing towards the firewall on the intake manifold. I could NOT see this crack while its was on the car.

End result, vehicle in shop for 3 days (way to big a job for my garage as the whole sub-assembly has to come out) and a great price. Saved me tearing the little remaining hair I have out!
These are standard rubber mounts, however later model cars may be different. The mechanic has seen this previously, however it is not common. Purely wear and tear over time, nothing specific. Car runs beautifully now.
hope this helps
Cheers emoticon

Re: Engine Mounts

Hi Dave,

Was there any need to replace the other 3 mounts due to the load they would have had while this one was damaged?

Re: Engine Mounts

We changed the front and rear mounts as, once the centre member was removed, these two had noticeble cracks. I reckon its better to do these things in pairs if possible, so would have done the front anyway even if it looked undamaged. The left and right mounts look ok, just the standard rubber deterioration. (you can get your head in pretty well, once half the car is off and it is on a hoist!).nothing major to worry about with those two, from what was seen.
I pretty much grounded the car until I could get it fixed, once i worked out what was going on, just to save any more damage if possible. I think beach driving aggravated an existing tear, and also started the rear mount to go as well, as the vibration was very noticeable afterwards.
As with all cars, you fix one thing and something else lets go.....so fingers crossed. emoticon I am not 100 percent on the history of this car, I know it had a new engine put in it by the previous owner, so they may have replaced two mounts (the left and right) at the same time, hence the difference in wear from the Front and Rear.
Hopefully its all sweet now emoticon

posticon Re: Engine Mounts

Hi guys
my 03 manual had a crack similar to picture earlier on in this post, being a mech and having acess to hoist decided to do it my self , as for having to remove sub frame me & a 2nd year apprentice did whole job in about two hours , with out removing sub frame, it was a very tight squeeze, but using two tyre levers & some muscle we got the job done.
worst part was the 2 top bolts holding mount to gear box you can not see the bolt heads at all
so had to do by feel ,
( now i know why dealer only qouted $200.00 ) if they had to remove sub frame as mentioned earlier cost would be 3 x that price with there labour rates

hope this helps

Re: Engine Mounts

Well I can add engine mount to the growing list of issues (struts, wheel bearing, windscreen wiper) before 40,000km on my x-trail. Took it to a non-Nissan service centre as just out of warranty (typical!), and they've picked it up. Makes me wonder if Nissan had spotted it at the last service but decided to let it slide. cynical I know, but Nissan servicing makes you like that.

Re: Engine Mounts, Hydraulic ?

jalalski

Yes just a reply on the engine mount issue. My Exy is about 4 years old and I have a failed rear engine mount and no warranty left! I spotted it from the leaking fluid from the cross and center members and then I found both sides of the rear mount were soaked. It looked like dirty engine oil but felt watery between the fingers.

I will be getting it fixed as im worried I may get further damage to other engine parts Nissan will be fixing it next week and the cost will be $371 parts and labour.

Cheers

Re:

Hi Pete,
The hydraulic mounts can be expensive to buy but your local mechanic can fix these easily and much cheaper than Nissan.
I had a similar isue with my MIL's Mazda 3, she thought she had an oil leak but turned out that the top engine mount had a split in it.
It cost her $175 for parts and labour.

Re: Engine Mounts

Hi BigPete,

$371 for parts and labour is pretty good, where about do you score the deal?

After 5 yrs and 65000km, I am getting both front and rear mounts replaced very soon, Most dealer workshop charge between $750 to $900 for the total work, fyi each engine mount costs $207.

Spoke to nearby mechanics, labour alone is in the $350 to $550 range for 3.5 to 4 hours of work. No one will do the work without lowering the subframe.

It is possible to source similar mounts cheaply from US ($54 each plus shipping), but since front and rear mounts are different in size, I am not 100% sure if self importing is the way to go.

In the end it probably costs me $200 more with the dealership service, but saves me time.
