If you gonna go all the way murdering an exy, then having it repainted again in 10 years shouldn't be a problem for what you wanna do.

I was thinking about this, but does anyone actually know what it costs to get a complete car and rims painted?

Nathan (Naff) should be able to tell you, as his bro is a painter/smash repairer.

Painting a car in any colour, matt, gloss or otherwise won't hurt the car at all. It's just the resell you need to think of... because not many people are going to share your enthusiasm for matt black. You'd need to allow for repainting again (unless it was written off!).

For a full respray you'd be looking at over $5000. My brother would do it for significantly less, but unfortunately you are in VIC!

Re: 'Murdering' an X-Trail?

Yeah thanks Naff, I was sort of figuring to get the job done properly it would be 4k+, which immediately killed my enthusiasm for the project. Still, now I am on the search for some black rims, or perhaps black with a slight strip of red. Then I can get all the X-trail badging painted red. That or I still go with my idea of Matt black wheels and then matt out the badgind on the exxy.

Trying to find an all black rim is very hard. Many available in the US of course, just not a lot kicking around in Aus.

You could use the poor man's method - buy a set of 15" steel rims from wreckers and don't bother putting the wheel covers on, and to maintain the matt finish, just make sure you never wash the brake dust off emoticon

You could apply the same "don't wash them" theory to any other wheels of your choice, of course (if you insist on having 20" for example).

Yeah.. like Rich said, get a used set of rims. Only, take to them with a scourer and some sandpaper (I'll get the weights you need) rub them down and then paint them. Or just take them to a spray painter emoticon

My brother fixed up scratches on my last wheels (in the black sections). No worries!

Re: 'Murdering' an X-Trail?

As most alloys are made partly/mostly (?) of aluminium, you may need to use a special paint or application procedure to get the paint to stick. And if there's any trace of brake dust on them, then the paint also won't stick very well.

Yeah, you just need a porous surface, hence the mention of scourers and sandpaper.

The next thing you have to do cam is grab some 1200 wet & dry and rub your Exy back to get rid of that nice shiny finish. hahahaha
