I'm under the impression that the Petrol models (in CVT and the Manual) have the same engine and therefore should mirror the results? I'm not mechanically minded but would the need for a clutch have an impact on the results? Yes, they are identical engines, so if anything, the manual petrol model should show marginally better gains due to less loss in the drive-train but in saying that, I do believe the difference will be quite negligible. quote:I would have thought that the need to pay for only the cost of materials would be a good incentive. If I was in Cooee of Sydney I'd consider it. Yeah, it seems the majority are driving CVT powered petrol models LOL quote:On another note, I was reading into the modification of the chips. So just to be clear, by installing the cat system as described on this forum (can't remember if it was this topic specifically or another describing the same issue) you wouldn't need to modify any other component of the vehicle after the installation (of the recommended cat system on this site for the CVT Petrol model) was complete? That's correct, the factory ECU is quite capable of handling the modifications you throw at it and this includes the cat. back system and even a full exhaust system upgrade with an extractors, it is only when you start adding bits like a cold air intake and such that you should be looking at fitting a piggy back ECU. quote:Would the improvements to the (Manual) Petrol model be significant enough to warrant the estimated $1,000 upgrade (not including freight and labour)? In my view and based on the results I have seen with all of the Hi-Tech system, they worth every cent because you are not only paying for the gain, you are paying for top quality which is backed by 10 years warranty which no other business out there offers....not even Nissan! quote:Lastly, I got all of my last mods completed by a company (that specialised specifically in exhaust, suspension etc upgrades) that would probably be able to replicate the cat system using their own designs and would then be able to fit it too. Would it not be wise to allow this company to create and fit an upgraded exhaust system to my XTrail as the cat system you have worked with Lambros has been proven. Firstly, I do no support and will not support any exhaust shop copying the Hi-Tech design in any way, as the money and effort spent by Hi-Tech in designing these exhaust system for the X-Trails would far exceed any goodwill gestures that any business out there can offer and the price they charge based on the materials they use and the quality of workmanship is peanuts compared to the quality of other exhaust system which are price almost the same. In saying this, Hi-Tech can't police everyone of course and what you will end-up will be just a copy of the original design but the quality of the components won't be the same. It is your call if you want to save money and potentially sacrifice quality. quote:And second lastly (bad English), I've noticed that other forum members (like nananut and another on the previous page to this thread) haven't mentioned using the original design. So what I'm trying to say is that I might be able to get my original modification place to upgrade and exhaust system that will deliver be performance which is designed and fitted by them so that I may save some costs? My answer to this is the same as your previous bullet point. Cost is not everything, quality is! I won't bolt on any system on any car unless I know the results and impacts it gives, so there is no point in bolting on something shiny if you can't back it up with results and offer good after-sales warranty on it too.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 21 Feb 2014 05:52:10 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2081113,from=rss#post2081113https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2081113,from=rss#post2081113Well he's right in saying that a set of extractors (by themselves) won't achieve much, not unless you change the entire exhaust system at the same time, replace the cat. converter with a high flow one and then add more performance mods, like a cold air intake and a piggy back ECU.....so yeah, your father in law's question was missing many bits and pieces nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 21 Feb 2014 05:34:29 +0000 Re: T31 Exhaust upgradehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2081110,from=rss#post2081110https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2081110,from=rss#post2081110Thanks nananut, I will make some calls before I head back to Brisbane in the future. The exhaust is cat back replacement with 2.5" stainless steel pipe, Magnaflow resonator and muffler. Total is $1200 built on site and fitted together with a lifetime guarantee. No dyno. Just done the drive from Perth to Kal against very strong head winds and lots of overtaking and had to refill at Coolgardie (40km west of Kal). Usually I would go all the way to Kal (just) with few overtaking and little or no head wind. Give it a few more return trips and see how the car adapts to the new exhaust. Sound wise, I can't tell the difference since I didn't drive my car for a month before the exhaust was done and my hearing is not the best. Definitely not loud as I had ask for same noise level or quieter.nondisclosed_email@example.com (nananut)Tue, 28 Jan 2014 22:05:58 +0000 Re: Exhausthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2070578,from=rss#post2070578https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2070578,from=rss#post2070578At 2 weeks old and with 2600km on the clock already, Lambros and his crew fitted the Exy with the new exhaust. There is a slightly deeper exhaust note under load, otherwise you can't hear any difference at all over the standard system. Fuel economy is definately improved. One thing I've also noticed after 6000km already is that using Caltex Vortex Diesel improves fuel economy noticeably over ordinary diesel. Bottom line, I'm very happy with the result and highly recommend a visit to Lambros and the boys in Surrey Hills. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Charlie250)Sun, 27 Jan 2013 20:41:30 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069799,from=rss#post2069799https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2069799,from=rss#post2069799Hi Charlie, That's good to hear. As the back-pressure has probably been reduced with the new exhaust, then everything else in the engine management system changes. So the economy gauge may show different levels, but the acid test of real fuel consumption will be at the measured volume of fuel at subsequent refills when compared to kilometers driven. If the exhaust improvement has added to the fuel efficiency as well as power, it will show up there. If it has only given more 'on-demand' power, then the fuel efficiency may go backwards as that extra power is used to provide more fun. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Fri, 26 Oct 2012 19:59:19 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068027,from=rss#post2068027https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068027,from=rss#post2068027Not sure I want to replace the factory muffler which is stainless steel with a mild steel system which is prone to rust and I have never measured the effectiveness of an exhaust system and expected it to reduce fuel economy, so your analogy here is a strange one. If you're claiming more power as a result of this system then it's only natural for the fuel economy to either stay the same or go up slightly, but I have never seen an exhaust system replacement be used for added fuel economy, so your results are subjective am afraid and could be attributed to many things (example, driving style; road conditions, etc)nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 26 Oct 2012 08:02:26 +0000 Re: T31 Exhaust upgradehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068025,from=rss#post2068025https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2068025,from=rss#post2068025Took my new X-trail to an appointment in Mandurah (1 hour drive) after getting my new exhaust fitted, here are the fuel usage readings. I am not sure if you have done enough research to determine the need to remove the 2nd cat converter and the benefits this will provide to the car performance, fuel consumption and ECU impacts as well. Based on previous experiences and testing, we found that there is no point in removing the 2nd cat if you gonna leave the primary cat (which is part of the manifold in place) and even more so when the size of the exhaust pipes is not changing. Performance gains aside (if you are not interested in them), but the exhaust shop which fitted this exhaust system for you could have determined your existing gas flow rate and restrictions and illustrated to you the benefits after fitting the high flow cat converter. This would have been the least I would have asked for apart from being happy with the exhaust note If you take the above into consideration and the fact that they have left almost the entire stock system in place, $700 bucks for a high flow cat and a tin at the back is a bit pricey, but it is your choice of course. You also need to know that when you call your insurance to have the exhaust system added, stay away from mentioning the phrase "sports exhaust", as the insurance companies (most of them anyway) will associate that automatically with the highly modified performance cars. Instead use the term "stainless steel exhaust system to provide more ground clearance for my 4WD" Please post some pics of your brand spanking new Ti with the new exhaust system. P.S. Mine will be staying standard this time LOL nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 20 Jan 2012 10:37:02 +0000 Re: T31 Exhaust upgradehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2059770,from=rss#post2059770https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2059770,from=rss#post2059770I've just installed a CAT back system on my new Exy Ti 2.5 petrol with CVT. Now i went to two exhaust places hear in Sydney, Liverpool Exhaust (the makers of hurricane headers) and Budget Exhaust (a exhaust performance specialist) both suggested the same. I ended up going to Budget Exhaust, www.budgetexhaust.net.au/ 1. Leave the existing exhaust manifold and the 1st pre Cat in the engine bay. 2. Cut out the 2nd Cat and replace with a high flow CAT. 3. Cut out the rear muffler and replace with sports 4. Both were stainless steel. 5. They did not remove the existing pipe, as it was stainless all ready. Cost $700 buck GST incl. and work completed within 1hr. I don't need convincing on the performance gains of installing a sports exhaust, my purpose for installing the exhaust is for economy, getting exhaust gases out quicker allows the engine to burn the fuel better without the old gases still in the chamber (better fuel economy = more km per tank). However if you do have a lead foot you will accellerate alot faster and burn more fuel, being less effiecent. I have had sports exhausts on my past 8 new cars over the last 15 years. Finally Well, it's taken more than a while to get Lachlan's T31 Petrol CVT exy dynoed correctly to give us a figure which we can present to you in terms of power gains. I just got a call from both Hi-Tech and Lachlan saying that the T31 Petrol CVT has gained between 10-12KW at the wheels as a result of fitting the Hi-Tech cat. back system with the most noticeable and peak torque gain was in mid range RPM. Details and dyno charts will be posted tonight when Lachlan scans them and emails them to me. HUGE thanks to Lachlan for spending the entire day at AutoTech today to get these results and for his dedication since fitting this system back in November and giving us the needed feedback about it. Much appreciated mate! P.S. Autotech charged Hi-Tech $220.00 to do this exercise and they had to do 15 RUNS on the dyno to get the CVT to cooperate! The dyno place simply could NOT dyno Lachlan's CVT exy at all and we couldn't get a consistent reading. This means that I can no longer trust the "before" reading we got for the T31 CVT as they couldn't do the "after" reading and kept blaming the CVT for this inconsistency. I spoke to Lambros today and we agreed that Lachlan's CVT is best dynoed using a conventional 4WD type of dyno instead of a hub dyno, so we're going to take Lachlan's exy to AutoTech Engineering (the guys who installed the piggy back ECU for some of us) and get them to do the "before" and "after" dyno runs for us. Spiro (AutoTech owner) is more than happy to help us out. Sorry this has taken so long, but arranging a time with the first dyno place proved to be a bit of a challenge and they cancelled the appointment a number of times and made Lachlan drive all the way to the dyno place for nothing.....Lambros and I were not impressed at all.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 23 Feb 2010 13:19:13 +0000 Re: T31 Exhaust upgradehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2036657,from=rss#post2036657https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2036657,from=rss#post2036657Hi Guys, There will be delay of 2 weeks before we can do the "after" dyno run and measure the gains, as the dyno place is very busy and so is Lachlan.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Mon, 23 Nov 2009 11:12:01 +0000 Re: T31 Exhaust upgradehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2036521,from=rss#post2036521https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2036521,from=rss#post2036521We didn't stay there overnight nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Fri, 20 Nov 2009 07:23:16 +0000
