Nice one Alex, when we left you i could tell by the way you were studying the map that you were hungry for more. As you said a standard exy might not have made your trip extention, but then again you did have a winch! emoticon

Paul

Sorry to not mention it. I was suggesting another detour when we were back at the cars but I got the impression everyone want to get home. I will try to remember you next time.

However, as you say, it was probably good you wern't - If I did not have the lift I think I would have turned back. Still, with two vehicles there to help each other ..... it would have made me braver.

Hey Alex, Chris, Emma and Dave, did you guys take any videos on the trip?

I am going to try and get the photos Rory took off him tonight, but I have to pop around to his place to get them so hopefully I will be able to do that this evening.

Re: Forum Watagans Trip 19 April 2008

As we discovered on the 2nd-last Newnes trip (I thought it was late last year but it was almost 12 months ago now!) that A/T tyres aren't much better than standard tyres on very slippery clay!

John was on factory tyres and the rest of us were on BFG's, and John appeared to be keeping pace with the rest of us, but it could've been his driving experience of course.

The problem is that the A/T tyres hold the clay in the grooves at low speeds. You need to accelerate or keep up a considerable speed to make the clay come free of the grooves in the tread. I almost found out the hard way as I had very mud-caked grooves and was sliding sideways down-hill (as you'll read in that thread) and had to gun it to get traction! The advantage factory tyres (or any H/T for that matter) would have is that the mud wouldn't stick as easily as the grooves are much thinner.

I don't know Rich, Alex had it a lot easier on the muddy hill climbs with hit Cooper ATRs than the rest of us on H/T rubber. It is a shame we don't have a video of Alex and then one of us doing the first muddy hill climb as he went straight up while the rest of us were all over the place.

That said the clay was all chopped up because a grader had been through beforehand. If the clay had been more in chunks he might not have had such and easy time.

If you have a look at the photo below you can see my tyres were just stuffed with clay, but like I say the clay was fine after the grader so you are probably right

Hi Paul,

I took 3 videos, but they are hopeless and virtually unwatchable. I'm still learning this new camera of mine. I practiced with it on Sunday and hopefully on the next outing I will have my skills together.

Rory was snapping away there, so he might have some good pics. emoticon

Ok guys, I am just back from Rory's and got a few more photos and videos, below;

The first few are of Dave climbing that rocky section....he made it first attempt

Dave will be happy even though the quality is not good because he was leading the way so unfortunately did not get too many photos (I am sure Brett knows how you feel)

Image Image Image

Next up are some more shots of Alex, from these pictures you can better appreciate why Alex chose not complete that creek crossing

Image Image

and then the by now obligatory shots of Chris leaving a nice layer of rubber on that rock climb LOL

Image Image

Rory also had some good video shots

Firstly there was my little puddle splash

Second up is Alex doing the rock climb

here is my attempt

and if anyone wants to do a comparison here is Chris again sorry chris, but if it is any consolation I fell on by ass while filming LOL emoticon

Looks like you all had a fantastic day of fun - great pics!

Sorry I couldn't be there but I was out with the club near Lithgow. Not a lot of mud but steep rocky rutted inclines, river crossings etc was great fun too. Steep grades I wouldn't have thought any X-Trail would climb up. I was the only softroader amongst the big guys - they were doing this stuff in low gear. If I can get some pictures I'll do a proper report on it.

Even so Dave, maybe chuck them up, if they are totally unwatchable you can always take them down again

Sorry Paul, I deleted the videos in disgust!!! 8(

Thanks for the pics from Rory. I have shown a few people some of the pics from the trip and they keep asking "is that you?" to which I keep replying "no". It'll be good to show them that I actually did get into it.
