Sorry I couldn't be there but I was out with the club near Lithgow. Not a lot of mud but steep rocky rutted inclines, river crossings etc was great fun too. Steep grades I wouldn't have thought any X-Trail would climb up. I was the only softroader amongst the big guys - they were doing this stuff in low gear. I almost found out the hard way as I had very mud-caked grooves and was sliding sideways down-hill (as you'll read in that thread) and had to gun it to get traction! I don't know Rich, Alex had it a lot easier on the muddy hill climbs with hit Cooper ATRs than the rest of us on H/T rubber. It is a shame we don't have a video of Alex and then one of us doing the first muddy hill climb as he went straight up while the rest of us were all over the place. That said the clay was all chopped up because a grader had been through beforehand. If the clay had been more in chunks he might not have had such and easy time. quote:basshead wrote: The advantage factory tyres (or any H/T for that matter) would have is that the mud wouldn't stick as easily as the grooves are much thinner. If you have a look at the photo below you can see my tyres were just stuffed with clay, but like I say the clay was fine after the grader so you are probably right nondisclosed_email@example.com (PMcDermott)Mon, 21 Apr 2008 20:22:34 +0000 Re: Forum Watagans Trip 19 April 2008https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2011943,from=rss#post2011943https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2011943,from=rss#post2011943As we discovered on the 2nd-last Newnes trip (I thought it was late last year but it was almost 12 months ago now!) that A/T tyres aren't much better than standard tyres on very slippery clay! Had a great time in the dirt/mud/rocks. But I have got to say the company was good too Here is Chris and Emma going up the first clay hill This is the rock ledge Another puddle Chris leaves his mark The famous tree slug By the way, that creek on the Old Mill road we turned back at - I never intended to try. It was much too steep. I think if it was perfectly dry the exy would have too much overhang. I just drove up to it to see if anyone could get an impressive pose shot (which they did - thanks) After everyone else went home I went back the way we came and accross to the Pines Forrest camping area. All easy road except for the 3km climb up the mountain which was less than 10kph (I made it up in 2WD, so I think that Ford was entitled to try that clay bit). I then went down Prickly Ridge Road which ends only 4.5km from the expressway. There were several sections of clay, most of it on level ground. It was so bad there was no steering. On the first one I ended up 45 degrees to the road, so I decided to put it into Auto mode There were some deep wheel ruts from other 4WDs and while I thought they were a bit deep for me I had to go in them to stop sliding off the road! So I had to go faster than I wanted to to keep the momentum up so that if it did get deep I would keep going. I ground once, so I doubt the standard exys would have got through. The A/Ts were not an advantage at this point Its interesting how much grip clay on clay gives! A couple of times I thought there was a real possibility I was going to have to use the winch - either to get me out of a deep rut or to get me back on the road. However I managed to make it through (after negotiating another tree about the same size as the other one). I encountered the clay at about 5.30 so most of this was done in the dark, which added to the interest. I want to go back It was sooo much fun Alex Admin Edit: Rego plates removed from one of the pics.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Alex70)Sun, 20 Apr 2008 21:14:35 +0000 Re: Forum Watagans Trip 19 April 2008https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2011904,from=rss#post2011904https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2011904,from=rss#post2011904quote:DingoMouse wrote: Where on the info pages is the information about imageshack and uploading images etc, I might save that for next time.
