Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

*** Heads up Guys*** I just found out that the NPWS have closed off a large section of the Watagans Forest Rd due to road works and slippery conditions. Thankfully our planned route does not include this section of the area. I'm trying to find out from State Forests if there are any road closures across the route we are taking. I will let you know if I hear anything.

**** Heads up Mk II ****. Updated weather forecast is for heavy showers and local thunder tomorrow. Though they still haven't had a lot in the Watagans, this isn't promising. It hasn't stopped raining all morning in the city. Paul, what do you think? I'm still keen to go, but I don't want to end up turning back 10 minutes after we start....when i could have stayed in bed!!! Plus I don't want to see anyone bend their car for the sake of pressing on when it's too dangerous.

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

I'm all for pressing on. It doesn't matter how much is closed, there will still be some dirt tracks open.

I have looked at the weather radar a few times this morning and it appears the rain is over Sydney only (or mainly). The weather stations nearest where we are going are Newcastle, Cessnock and Mangrove Mountain. Since 9.00 this morning their rain has been
Sydney 4.4mm
Mangrove Mt 1mm
Newcastle 0mm
Cessnock 0mm

Over the last three and a bit days the total rain has been
Sydney 17mm
Mangrove Mt 7mm
Newcastle 9mm
Cessnopck 1mm

The forecast for the Hunter tomorrow is:
Isolated showers, tending scattered in the east with some local thunder near the coast. Cloudy. Moderate southeast winds, fresh at times near the coast.
Newcastle: A few showers. Min: 14 Max: 21

For Mangrove Mt it is rain and Max 17
For Cessnock it is a chance of rain and Max 18

So I wouldn't let the heavy rain in Sydney stop you. Nobody should bend their car if they drive to the conditions.

Guys,

Take a couple of kayaks with you just in case LOL emoticon (just kidding)

And Dave, you won't need your chainsaw anymore, any fallen trees will be floating away from you when you approach them emoticon

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Fair point Alex.

Actually, there is an automatic weather station at Onley Forest (which is just east of the track we'll use) and they have only had 5mm in the past day.

I'm 100% keen to go.....no matter how wet it is. I'll just keep going until the track won't let me continue....(then I'll crack out that kayak Jalal)

I just wanted to make sure someone else was still keen to come along. At least there'll be two of us!!! We can always turn back if it gets too narky.

OK Alex.....I'll definately see you at Ourimbah.

OK guys....Alex and I are pressing on tomorrow as planned, so feel free to join us.

OK OK........Paul you're right......I AM getting soft in my old age emoticon

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't sitting at Ourimbah on my lonesome waiting for others to NOT turn up . It'll be great....bring on the mud. The wet will make even the more boring sections more interesting and more challenging. I mean it is "rainforest" after all. Plus, the cold lessens the chance of seeing snakes too....which (along with fallen trees) is my speciality on these treks.

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Dave,

Reading your posts and the "exciting" things you keep mentioning about these tracks, I won't be surprised if newbies will get scared-off emoticon

I have been to the Watagans twice and camped during winter and it bucketed down on us on the weekend, but it was lots of fun (check the trip report), mud-sliding was part of that fun and no snakes were there at that time either. We did have a guy run with the Olympic torch all night between our tents LOL emoticon

Paul: Suggest you make one final post with all the details, as it can be lost between all these replies.

Re: Watagans Trip April 2008

Ok Guys,

Only one sleep to go before the trip, which looks to be excellent.

Mother Nature has been kind to us all week and we can expect plenty of mud and grime at the Watagons.

Thankfully the rain has not been too heavy so we can be confident that the tracks won't have suffered too much damage.

And, being that we will be there representing the forum we will not be doing any damage to the tracks or the forest while we are there.

If will be a fun day out for all and if anyone else wishes to pop along you are more than welcome.

We will meet up at 9am the at rest area at Ourimbah off the Sydney Newcastle Freeway.

Map below

Image

At 9.30 we will head over to the servo, gas up and head out.

The planned route for the trip is:

Yarramalong, through to Cedar Brush Creek, Onley State Forest, up the Walkers Ridge Rd.

A quick duck down part of the Old Mill track (for those who want to see a few mongrel creek crossings), then out along Watagan Rd to Wollombi by about lunchtime.

After that, we can take some pics, have some lunch (and a Dr Jurds Jungle Juice for the non drivers) and then see if we want to tackle a causeway or two on the Yango Creek rd.

Should be a good mix of easy - moderate trails.

We will not be taking on anything too challenging and attendees need worry about being pushed beyond their comfort zone.

Looks to be a great trip and all attendess should take the time to read the
Forum Rules Regarding Events & Meet-ups

Confirmed Attendees for the trip are as follows:

PMcDermo (Paul)
Zipidee (Dave)
Alex70 (Alex)
Dingomouse (Chris & Emma)

I have sent each of you an e-mail PM with my mobile number in case you are running late

Anyone else who is considering attending please feel free to come along.

New and old members alike are more than welcome to attend what looks to be a great days driving.

See you all at Ourimbah and 9am
