Re: Transmission Oil Coolers on T31

For those with a Diesel Auto, sorry but the news is it will be too difficult and expensive to fit a transmission oil cooler to this model.

The cooling is actually done by piping engine coolant TO the transmission rather than piping oil from the transmission through an external cooler as in the manual transmission.
This is why the towing capacity for the Diesel Auto is lowered to only 1350kg instead of 2000kg for the Manual. Cooling the transmission oil with warm engine coolant is not as effective.

This means any external transmission oil cooler for the Diesel Auto would have to be not just an external radiator, but a self-contained water supply with pump and piping to recirculate the cooling water.

Found this when asked the question for a friend who has a Diesel Auto.

Re:

I thought a while about the diesel auto. One option is an oil cooler radiator to the the coolant feed line to cool the cooling coolant . So it is colder than the engine temp.
The radiator does not care witch fluid is running thru.

Other option is to make a custom adapter to replace the OE water-oil cooler. To disable the water system and the new adapter has oil hose outlet and inlet fittings.

The gearbox has a plug, where you can install a oil pressure gauge and measure the line pressure. Fitting there a T-fitting and take the oil from there, but where to make the return fitting?

Re: Transmission Oil Coolers on T31

Did some detective work on google and found out that the same 6 speed auto Jacto JF613E is used in Mitsubishi Outlander 3.0 V6 XL and it has Oil cooler for the transmission.
Joined the American Mitsubishi forum to confirm my thougths and get the service manual.

Check the PDF for the Outlander W6AJA auto trans number 4 and 6 pipe

And the picture of the Jatco JF613E

Can someone confirm that the T31 diesel has bolts in similar locations?

Re: Transmission Oil Coolers on T31

On Nissans, the back plate is bit different, but it has 2 blanked pipes. I would try to loosen them one by one and if only from one squirts ATF then its is matter of pluming work to install the aux cooler. The squirting one will be the feed and the non squirting will be the return line.
