Speedo error on new T-31

I picked up my new (Twilight) T-31 Ti on Thursday, just in time to try it out over Easter. I'm delighted it but for one thing... the speedo over reads by 5 percent as compared to my Garmin GPS which I know from other vehicles is absolutely correct.

Now, I could just get used to this, it will probably help me avoid speeding fines... but... my warranty will expire when I have only traveled 95,000 instead of 100,000 Km and it wont help the resale value down the track. The trip computer would be in error too.

Has anyone else experienced speedo error in a new Nissan vehicle and if so, how amenable was Nissan at correcting this under warranty?

Hi John,

This not limited to the T31 and in fact not limited to Nissan, 5% is still within the legal limit of 10% variance allowed, so I doubt the dealer would do anything to re-calibrate your speedo.

This subject has been discussed in THIS thread.

Re: Speedo error on new T-31

Yep, my T31 over-reads also. It's about 5kph over between 60 and 100kph, which is a slight pain but I'm used to it already. You raise a good point about the total kms though.

I wonder whether getting some higher diameter tyres when due for replacement would fix the problem? 65s instead of 60s would even help I guess.

Re: Speedo error on new T-31

Pretty much everyones speedo reads over, usually it is in the region of 5%

Look at it this way, with the GPS, you know when you are REALLY doing 110 on the freeway, meanwhile everyone else is doing about 103, thinking they are doing 110.

So you can just slap on the cruise control and fly right by, without worrying about getting done.

I know of someone selling some larger wheels and tyres that will fix it for you emoticon

Re: Speedo error on new T-31

Thanks for your prompt and very welcome comments guys! I guess this was never a problem till car GPS's came on the scene. You know, my background is in aviation electronics servicing (42 years) and to my mind, 10 percent allowable error in a digital device, in this highly technical age is not only ludicrous, it's criminal! That is one law (standard) that needs to be brought into the 21st century real quick.

Jalal, I went through the old thread on this subject thanks to your link and found the Jaycar "digital speedo adjuster" link quite interesting. I will probably buy that kit, make it up and fit it. The biggest problem will be finding the "speedo wire" in the X-trail (and hiding the box from Nissan...lol)! It could be quite a while before I'm up for new tyres so the Jaycar kit looks like being the go.

I will be having a word with Nissan when I take it in for it's 1000 Km service next week and I'll let you know what their (predictable) response is.
John.

Re: Speedo error on new T-31

You are lucky John that the error is only 5%.
My new Maxima is 8% which prompted me to buy a GPS.
Strangely, my 2002 X-trail, which I still have, is 100% accurate according to my GPS.
Its the "luck of the draw" I guess.
I complained to the dealer who claimed they checked with Nissan, but as it was within the 'standard', they would do nothing.

Re: Speedo error on new T-31

Funnily enough, noticed exact same thing over easter myself. Take a bit of getting used to. I have a feeling though that the speedo error and the odometer are probably separate so 100,000 on the odometer probably is 100,000km. Might question the service guys when I take it in, it's nearly due for it's second service.

Hi John,

The Series 2 T30 had the speed signal sent to the combination meter (speedo) by CAN bus so this circuit would not be usable on it.
Not sure if the T31 has changed back to the old signal wire method of the Series 1 T30 for the speedo, but you should check before you get the kit.

Thanks Kev, you might have just saved me fifty bucks there... can't imagine Nissan reverting to earlier technology with the T31. Any comment here Jalal?
