Re: T31 4X4-i System

'LOCK' was engaged on both occasions.

It certainly felt as though the engine was working against the brakes (ESP-like), in particular the hill climb should never have been a problem in first gear.

I'm taking the car in for a service next week and I'll ask them, but I predict I'll get the 'ESP is turning off fine' response.

I need to run some tests on inclined mud to see whether there's any difference with the 'ESP off' button pushed. I could also try removing the ESP fuse and compare - would this cause any heartache?

Re: T31 4X4-i System

Guys,

I suggest you take a good read in the T31 service manual about the functions of the ESP and how it works.

ImageImage

There is all sorts of information there about the ESP and the entire 4x4i system which you will find pretty useful and it might answer some of your questions.

I was going to copy the information from the T31 ESM, but there are far too many pages to copy and it can be read directly online, as it links-up to many other pages in the manual.

I suggest you read first before pulling out any fuses or conducting further tests.

It can be downloaded from a thread in the T31 petrol forum section.

Saw the first episode of Top Gear Australia where they had a T31 Xtrail, Forester and V6 Rav4 in both sand and snow.

The commentator mentioned in the T31 on snow that it felt like the ESP was still working up an incline although he had it turned off emoticon

Yeah , I heard that too ! I wonder if it was the B L S D working , not the ESP , but then again that shouldn't cut engine power , Bugger more questions....... Anyway,Top gear is an entertainment show , not a car, road test show , so I take what they say with a grain of salt. (It could of been ice under the snow that cause all wheels to slip , They did put snow tyres on after a while on all cars.)

Re: T31 4X4-i System

Well, I'm pretty convinced that either the engine is being limited, or the brakes are being applied, during the conditions described above. I've looked through the ESM but couldn't see anything that would help.

I can only hope that at some stage Nissan (or omeone smarter/more knowlegdeable than me!) will address the problem.

Failing that, I'm going to find out which fuse is responsible for the ESP and if I get in trouble again, I'll consider pulling it.

Have you had a chance to take in and ask Nissan service their thoughts?

Unless you are up against an immovable object I cannot think why the engine would shut off partiucularly in manual with ESP off and Lock on. I would have expected wheel spin/slipping clutch etc.

Very odd

John

Re: T31 4X4-i System

I haven't taken it to the nissan dealership, there's only one up here and, well, the less said about them the better. As a result I take the car to the Toyota dealership for servicing (me and every other nissan owner in town by the look of it!), and didn't think they'd be knowledgeable enough to ask about this issue - probably should have in hindsight. I might hit them up at the next service.

It sort of gives them licence to thrash you car, doesn't it! 'Please tell me whether the ESP is working when it shouldn't be, like on a muddy track'. Mechanic says 'You BET!'

Re: T31 4X4-i System

hmm not sure why you would be losing power. Yesterday I drove my t31 all the way down to the Murray mouth for some fishing. At times I was driving in some really soft sand with my belly scraping on the of the wheel ruts but I didn't lose any power. If you have ever been to themurray mouth you'd know how tough it is! ( a few cruiserdrivrrs came over and asked how I got in there and were IMpressed with the torque.

My suggestion when on sand is second gear, ESP off, lock and keep it below 40kmph.
