Re: T31 4X4-i System

Thanks for that, it honestly wouldn't suprise me if I still had my foot on the clutch just out of habit. I'll have to find another big hill and give it a go.

Cheers emoticon

Question, why would Nissan make it so you have to have the clutch all the way out? Is it some sort of safety thing? I generally like to have some control over the clutch when going down a step area so that If I drop a tyre into a hole or hit a rock the car doesn't stall.

It does take a while for you to get used to it and you'll hear some sounds you are unfamiliar with but let the car do its job without pressing the clutch. Why is a question for the mechanics. From experience, having foot completely off the clutch slows the car down on some not very steep hills or is that engine braking or is that both? Hopeless mechanic here emoticon

Re: T31 4X4-i System

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to the forum - what a great read this has been. 22 pages on the original thread and all 17 pages here - thanks for sharing this collective piece of research.

I have the weird first cousin of the T31 - a Renault Koleos diesel manual, 2009 model. Bought new, converted to a camper for two, with 100 litres water, 100AH battery and 40 Litre Engel, 128w solar on roof, Foxwing awning & Oztent. Love it.

I agree with the common experience re Nissan dealers too, sadly. It has taken us from Sydney around Australia, Gibb River Rd, Dampier Peninsula, Ningaloo, Pilbara, Eyre Bird Observatory, Nullabor & Lake Eyre, Macquarie Marshes in flood - lots of amazing places. Beaches aplenty, low grade rocks and river crossings, one amazing mud bath en route to Maree after 25mm of rain...

I use AUTO pretty much everywhere, had never turned ESP off, and never got stuck - until a trip to Stockton late last year - in rain. Unexpected to say the least, and it was exactly as so many of you have described - dash lighting up like a Christmas tree, then dumped into 2WD, shut down, wait a minute, fire up, all good for 5 or 10 minutes, repeat.

I am fanatical about tyre pressures, and had trial-and-errored what I thought were the ideal pressures for the less than ideal tyres fitted (225R17 - too low profile - more on that later). I persisted with the standard rim size to 'prove or disprove' whether a wee softie like the Koleos (et al) could do The Big Trip. Had always had Patrols prior to that.

On previous trips to Stockton I found that in hot dry sand, 17psi hot was about the right mix of flotation and ground clearance. This would be about 15psi cold I think. So why would it struggle so badly in cool very wet conditions, never ever having struggled in sand before?

The only thing I can rethink of is that Stockton dune and back beach sand becomes MORE fluid when saturated than other sands. Low tide sand is hard like concrete. Very strange.

Thanks to this forum, I will turn off ESP in future, and see what happens.

Also of interest is that in the Renault version (and it's pretty much identical in all electrical and mechanical components to the T31) if you hold the ESPOFF button down for 10 seconds, ESP comes back on again - and the dash text message tells you. I assume this is what happens on the T31 too, even if it doesn't say so?

(On rim size - I’m going to try T30 16” rims if I can find some for the right money, with same rolling radius tyres that will bag a bit more)

I fitted a set of T30 steel rims in lieu of the OEM 18" wheels on my TL.

by using this handy website...

http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/

I worked out that 215/70 R16 were as near as buggrit the same rolling diameter as the original fitted 225/55 R18.

Having fitted these new tyres, I see that when I compare the GPS speedo with the dashboard. 100Kmh IAS still works out to be 96kmh TAS.

So you could probably be able to go up a bit more on the diameter and still have an accurate speedo

What was the result off-road? Any side effects? And what tread pattern are the new tyres?

Re:

A quick question for the more experienced:

I am going to be regularly towing a Jayco camper up a steep grassy hill to get it out of my shed (I haven't tried it yet). What mode should I be selecting on a CVT T31 Ti? Should I use the hill control, and if so, why?

Thanks in advance.

Mate, Hill DESCENT Control is designed to assist with going down steep hills, not up them. If you're towing up a slippery slope, I'd select 4x4Lock, select ESP OFF and go for gold.

Re: T31 4X4-i System

If you have to regularly tow it UP the slope to get it out, I presume from this you will also have to back it DOWN the same slope to put it in, correct ?

I see this as the more difficult manoeuvre.

But as Ian said, Hill (descent) control is for going down, while the Hill Start control is for starting on steep hills and maybe this is what you meant, but that should enable automatically.

I believe "Hill Descent" also works when reversing backwards down a hill. You need to be very careful to back straight down and not to be too sideways on a hill and set yourself up for a Roll-Over.
