How not to loose your hubcaps

Hi Guys,

Those of you with steel rims and the Nissan hubcap covers may wanna try this to save yourself spending a fortune for a lost hubcap.

I was driving home from work today and there was an ST exy right beside me, I looked at the wheels and this guy had a white cable tie (just one per wheel) wrapped around all of his hubcaps securing them to rims. I thought it was a good idea, especially if you're going off-road emoticon

yes its a good idea, but better than the white ones, I was in Bunnings a few weeks back and saw that you can now get silver cable ties, which would be perfect for this

Re: How not to loose your hubcaps

I'd put 2 on each wheel, on opposite sides of the hubcap because with only 1 the hubcap can still flop around if it came off and bang itself up quite badly before you stopped, probably needing you to get another one anyway to replace it.

It would also make them much less likely to be stolen!

It is possible to purchase stainless steel zip ties.

though you may want to shove a pair of side cutters in your spare wheel carrier if you use them.

My father had a habit of using them to zip my big toes together when I was being deliberately annoying, so I'm well aware that they exist.

Re: How not to loose your hubcaps

It's probably worth me mentioning that on one of the last Nissan services I had (40,000k? - it was the one I had them do just before warrantly ran out), that they made a note on the service report something along the lines of "wheel covers had many broken securing clips" and the service manager/assistant asked me if they were genuine wheel covers. I told him they were the orginal ones from when I bought the vehicle and he said he'd never seen one with so many broken clips. I said I'd done considerable amount of 4WD'ing and days on the beach but he said that shouldn't make any difference. I should've requested they replace them all under warranty, but I figured they'd find some excuse not to (especially if I'd jst disclosed all the 4WD'ing I'd done etc).

I'm not too worried, as I picked up a 2nd-hand set from a forum member (now I've lost all the original wheel covers at various times - 2 on the road somewhere, and two completely broke when they were removed for washing the wheels).

The (black) electrical ties are a great idea emoticon

Most hire-car companies use them to ensure that the hubcaps do not come off and also to make sure that the hirer hasn't taken the wheel off (not very trusting, eh?) emoticon

Re: How not to loose your hubcaps

Another way of not loosing wheel trims on a trail is to take them off before you leave home emoticon
Its, cheaper than cable ties and less hassle when you want to take your wheel off. But more importantly, last time I was out in the mud I got a lot of it between the wheel trim and the rim - so much so that the wheel went out of balance and I got a lot of steering wheel shudder.

From now on (if I remember) my practice is to tale them off for each off-road trip.
