Torque Damper

After looking at the amount of engine rocking recently I started thinking of how a Torque Damper might help our Xtrails, especially those of us with power mods such as the full exhaust, TBS and CAI.

In addition, there are also stronger, more resiliant engine mounts but with the Torque Damper these might not be needed.

Any opinions, especially from those who have one fitted ? emoticon

Re: Torque Damper

If Jalal is right, perhaps Kev's engine mounts are buggered already?

I don't recall any engine mount failures yet, although once you start getting more engine output, their life tends to be shortened. I had "solid" mounts on my Pulsar - basically they were nolathane/poly-urethane bushes with virtually no "give" in them - the factory ones are rubber with air gaps in them to allow the rubber parts of the engine mount to flex and absorb the engine tilting and vibrations.

Re: Torque Damper

Don't get me wrong guys, the "rocking" only happens when you put the Xtrail in drive or reverse and have someone press the accelerator while also having a foot planted firmly on the brake, similar to acceleration under load.

This "rocking" is just the torque load taking-up on the motor/transmission and happens in all cars.

When in park or neutral, there is minimal engine rock as it is only flywheel inertia to contribute to the torque take-up.

If indoubt, try the same test yourself emoticon

I don't trust my wife to do this test with me while I stand in front of the car and watch the engine, so this has to wait until the next NSW meet-up when one of the guys (who doesn't hate me LOL emoticon) takes control of my exy while I watch the engine and see what you're saying. emoticon

Re: Torque Damper

I have a Revolution Autoworks Torque Damper installed on my car. Ive had it before the supercharger and before I installed the front and rear solid polyurethane motor mounts last week. The engine does not move.

You can see it in this video
, with a supercharger on the engine, there is much more torque applied here and movement is minimal with just the torque damper installed.

Im not sure the Rev Auto TD will work for the exy since it mounts to the firewall, and that may be different, but the Weapon R TD may work because it mounts to the underside of the motor mount, which would be in the same position on the exy as it is on the sentra, the only questionable part would be where it mounts to the strut tower.

The only way to find out is if one of you exy owners is willing to front the money and find out if it fits.

Re: Torque Damper

Kevin,

If you show us exactly how and where yours is mounted, we can compare it to the points we have in our engine bay. It'll be much cheaper than buying it and finding out that it doesn't fit.
