Liam, it sounds like your clutch is not adjusted correctly. The symptoms you have described sounds like a worn throw-out bearing.

An ill-adjusted clutch can cause the bearing to spin all the time (it's not designed to spin all the time) which has two effects - poor shifting performance as well as premature wear of the throw-out bearing.

Prolonged driving in this condition is not recommended
