Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Hi, hope this hasn't been discussed before - I couldn't find a thread. We have a very long kayak and the distance between the preset roof racks is not enough to provide sufficient stability. Is there any way of placing an extra roof rack - perhaps on the spoiler mount? Or has anyone had a "ladder bar" fitted up from the tow bar or nudgebar to accommodate this?
Thanks.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Hi Justin,

Instead of another rack for stability, could you just run some ropes from the nose to each recovery point under the front (with padding for the rope on the bumper ofcourse) and from the tail to the towbar ?
Certainly cheaper emoticon

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Hi Justin,

You don't need to fit a 3rd roof rack to carry a kayak, as there are special roof rack attachments that can be used exactly for this purpose.

This has been covered-off in THIS existing thread.

Both Rola and Rhino make roof rack attachments for carrying kayaks and they may fit the factory roof racks.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Thanks guys. Yeah, its not so much the kayak holders that I need, just something to prevent the whole lot wobbling as the kayak is over 5m long and so you have a few metres portruding forwards and backwards from the roof bars. I have been tying the nose and tail down to the bumper (tow points) but this is cumbersome (it works well though). Do you think a spoiler would be strong enough to attach to with padding? It won't take the weight of the kayak, just stop vertical wobble? I have seen tradies with removable ladder mounts attached to their front nudge bars and wondered if this might work to rest the nose on. And, could anyone tell me what sort of bolt / attachment is under the spoiler-mount cover? I haven't removed mine. Maybe I could customize a bar to bolt in here?? Only had the vehicle 24hrs but already got some mud on it!!! Loving it.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

I'm thinking of custom making a roof rack for a T31 and using the rear mount.
Jalal, your the guru!
1. How does the rear plastic cover unclip, I tried but I can see myself damaging it?
2. Are there any mounts like on the others for which to attatch a third rack?
Any help will be appreciated, thanks.
Tony

Tony,

It's a major job. They're held by a bolt going through the roof and the only way to get to that bolt is to remove the roof lining.

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

Hi there, I'm in the same boat (excuse the pun)! Just wondering if ok to carry rv4 oztent 2.4m long on top of 1.5 metre aluminium luggage rack, and what sort of extra bar if any required on rear roof rail. or just squeeze into rear of xtrail and rest on the armrest?

thanks, Martin

Re: Fitting extra (3rd) roof rack

I've seen a late model Patrol with 3 bars on the roof. They looked factory-fitted, too. I guess the Patrol has a significantly longer roofline than the X-Trail, and the roof rails (along the sides) might be different to the X-Trail's arrangement, too.
