Sand/Safety flag

I did a search but came up blank regarding a sand/safety flag. I thought it had been talked about before.
Has anyone got one, made one or even needed one?
One of the local 4WD places (ARB?)sells them for about $89, & I have looked a bit on ebay, where there are a few but mostly American so postage might be a bit high.
One company was selling their standard one for about US$20 (3piece fibreglass) & about US$30 for the quick release one.
This gave me an idea about my old tent with it's fibreglass poles. I will rummage in the shed & see what ideas I come up with.
Meantime if anyone else has any info please, pass it on.

Re: Sand/Safety flag

Dave,
Having spent some time doing 'The Deserts', I have seen almost every type of flag pole design that man could come up with. Some people use fishing rods, some use the flexiable tent poles that come apart but have elastic in the middle, some us their aerials and others use the specific poles. You must be mindful that there is a lot of force not only on this pole, but also the connection point, so chose this carefully. Whilst your bouncing over sand dunes or ruts, the 10ft plus pole is flexing with the vehicle movement and also against the wind. I have seen one which was attached to a side mirror, rip it completely off.

If you intend to do a few trips, the ARB poles are the best. They collapse down into 3-4 pieces which screw together so they wont come apart when flexing. It is also best to get a flag made of less resistant material, to restrict the amount of stress on the actual pole. Some places (I think ARB is one), manufacturer a flag which is made of light webbing that is full of tiny holes to allow wind through it.

Good luck with what-ever you chose, but be mindful that the $100 spent on a good quality item, will have more chances or preventing damage to your $40,000 vehicle. emoticon

Re: Sand/Safety flag

Hi Dave,

I did a google search for "vehicle safety flags" in australian references and found this from Blackwoods as first on the list.

Try a few other safety equipment suppliers and you might get more choices.

Can the UHF antenna be used as the flag pole? emoticon

I think it'll be a cheaper option and it's not like you'll be driving with this flag on the road everyday LOL

Just a thought.
