Engine Torque Settings...

Hi,
I have an '02 xtrail TI, 100k on the clock..
Started the hexy this morning and within 10 seconds it's billowing white smoke so had to shut it down. White residue on the dipstick confirms my Head Gasket has given up the ghost. The Engine was really cold when it happened so over heating was not involved which leads me to believe it may well be just a duff gasket (Fingers Crossed).
In the week prior i noticed that when i started up it always idled rough for about 10 seconds, then ran like a dream. This happened whether the motor was hot or cold and upon reflection i think a small leak may have put coolant into the cylinder which needed to be forced out before running properly. Having done a few Head Gaskets before (including a magna ts executive which Lucifer must have designed himself) i'll strip it down, the only problem is i need the torque settings for the Head to go back on. Does anyone have the Torque settings for the Head Bolts? It would be a great help. Thanks again Shawn in Perth.

Re: Engine Torque Settings...

Hey Jalalski, Thanks alot that's brilliant. If i can rack your brains a mo... it says on section d. to tighten the bolts to 34.3 to 44.1. Does that mean tighten all to 34.3 then retighten all to 44.1. This would be normal practise but just checking. Also any idea why the Gasket is compressed to [sign in to see URL] to start with then loosened off. Lastly why do they give a 'degree' to finish off tightening. I'm not questioning it just it's strange to me as in the past i've just had the final Torque setting and i've gradually tightened up to it (ie tighten to a third, then two-thirds, then fully tightened) thanks for your help, much appreciated, Shawn in Perth.

Yes, I believe it is the case.

The torque procedure for tightening a Torque-To-Yield (TTY) head bolt involves tightening it until a certain torque reading is reached. Then the bolt is given an additional turn to a specified angle to load the bolt beyond its yield point for maximum clamping pressure.

I am not sure why they recommend compressing the head gasket and then loosening it. Sounds a bit odd.

Anyone else getting close to 100k getting nervous about their head gasket.
Seems we've had a few lately.

Re: Engine Torque Settings...

I am wondering... Does it state anywhere in the workshop manual that the cylinder head on the QR25DE needs torquing after a certain amount of mileage has been accrued?

Could this be why a lot of head gaskets are giving way?

Re: Engine Torque Settings...

Guys,

We have talked about possible causes for a blow head gasket in ]THIS thread and yes, it does seem that 100K is the point were this problem would surface if there is an issue with the coolant or the radiator is blocked.
