Rear spoiler/wing

Hi everbody.

Got a question that maybe a few of the more experienced caravan towers may be able to give me some advice on.

Would fitting a rear spoiler/wing give any advantages when towing a poptop caravan.

The van is not much higher than the exy, probably about 300mm, and weighs 850kg unladen. Is it likely to reduce the effect of the air striking the front of the van, which is fairly flat, and as a result give a bit better fuel economy, or would the effect be only minimal and not warrant the cost.

If I was going to fit one it would probably not be a genuine Nissan one and probably only be on the exy when towing.

I only have a ST hence no rear spoiler.

Any advice available would be appreciated

Re: Rear spoiler/wing

Hi John,

I'll be honest with you and say that the rear roof spoiler of the xtrail and the way it is shaped and designed is purely a cosmetic item and does nothing to improve aerodynamics and things like that.

Putting on and taking it off is not an option either, cause the aftermarket spoiler needs to be Sikaflexed in place to ensure it doesn't fly off and the genuine spoiler will take a whole lot trouble to take off.

Hey John, you are much better of gettin an air dam or wind deflector for the front of the caravan.

FIBREGLASS AIR DEFLECTOR from these people (you have to scroll down the page a fair way)

Wrap around corners for maximum wind resistance. Improves fuel economy. Reduces drag. Provides towing stability. Fits round bar roof bars which are not supplied with the unit.

Re: Rear spoiler/wing

Thanks for the info guys,

I new the nissan spoiler was purely cosmetic thats why I was considering a third party model.

The cost of fitting it for the benefit obtained is probablty not worth the effort.

I will look further into somthing to fit on the front of the van to reduce drag, but as my van has a large window all the way across it will probably need to easily removable so I can open the window.

I might try making one out of aluminim or fibreglass myself and see it is of any benefit.

I might also have a look at making a rear wing from some sheet metal that can attach to the roof rails on the exy to deflect the air.

If i get one made up I will post the results for all. My motivation can be a bit lacking at times though.

Again, thanks for your replies.
