Rattling noise from sunroof

For a while now my car has a rattling noise from the sunroof around the driver's head area. The noise is usually only present when the engine is running at idle speed in Drive. I've taken off the black plastic cover and tried putting my fingers on the problem but I can't locate what is exactly causing this. Has anyone had similar problems, and how did you fix it?

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

Hi Ron,

This problem has been reported by xtrailers overseas as well and it ended-up being a faulty sunroof track that needed replacing.

I hope your warranty is still current cause it'll cost mega bucks to have it replaced.

It's out of factory warranty however does have an additional 2 year Nissan dealer warranty on it. I'd need to check if this would be covered in the documentation.

Mine is making the same rattle, Jalal can you point me in the direction of where you saw this? As my local Nissan dealer is a pain the proverbial to get warranty work done. They claim that because I've got the low profile tyres it more likley to develop rattles (???).

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

I'm not 100% convinced that the noise is caused by the track itself. When touching the roof lining near where the sound comes from it stops, so it must be something with the track and the roof lining. From reading the Canadian forum some members had their track replaced yet the sound came back. It could also be that the noise was eliminated by removing and re-fitting of the roof lining.

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

Ron,

If you think it's the roof lining that is causing this, it'll be easy to prove that. Just stick a thick piece of sponge in there and drive a round for a couple of days to see if the noise is gone. If it'll help, then you need to take the entire roof lining off to see where it has been un-glued to fix the problem.

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

Hi Ron,

In the Canadian Xtrail link Jalal provided, one member posted
quote:

In the end i gave up, i've taken the plastic off around it to look for a fix, and i can stop it by shoving tissue into it, but of course that doesn't look so good and mean u can't close the shutter

So I think the rattle must be from the track for the shutter rather than the sunroof itself.

I also have the rattle for the last few months and I am going to investigate this further and report back.

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

I opened the sunroof at the weekend, located as closely as possible where the noise came from then tried to twist the track a little by grabbing it through the open roof, thumbs on top and fingers on the lining. Not sure if the track did actually twist but for the time being the noise is gone. I'm sure a piece of tissue would have worked too provided you can get it between the lining and the track. The roof still closes properly as well which is a bonus.
If the noise comes back I'll take the lining down.
Please note that in my case, the noise disappeared when touching the lining gently, without putting pressure on it.

Re: Rattling noise from sunroof

Ron,
When you say you opened the sunroof, do you mean the external glass sunroof or the internal roof shutter and was it the track for the glass sunroof or the track for the shutter ?
