Tinting the sunroof

Wondering if anyone has tinted their exy's sunroof??? I have had a couple of tinting shops say they will do it but not guarantee it because the glass may crack or explode in some cases. To do with the glass being laminated, when it is tinted this stops the glass from flexing with the heat and/or dissipating the heat.

One tinter said it usually only occurs in a sudden temperature change, such as a very hot day where the car has been in it for a while then you take it to a car wash and the sudden change in temperature on the glass causes it to crack. This fellow went on to say that it usually only occurs in older model cars and very rarely in new cars. I asked the service manager about it and he had heard of it happening to any exys or any car with a standard sunroof for that matter.

I'd like to know if anyone has tinted the sunroof and had any problems or not. I like to have the sun roof curtain open but lets too much light and heat in at the moment. This has been briefly touched on in another thread, but no info if anyone has done it.

Thanks

Re: Tinting the sunroof

Hi Scott,

Im a glazier by trade so i know a bit about what makes glass break!

If the sunroof is laminated (Can anyone confirm this? have a look at the edge of the glass. If it has a line going horizontally through the middle its laminated. If not, it is toughened) i wouldnt tint it if its lam.

If its toughened, There will be no problems tinting it. Toughened glass is alot more toralant of sudden tempreture changes. It is exactly the same as the side windows in your car. If there was a chance it could explode, we wouldnt be able to tint or windows at all

Hope this helps

Matt

Re: Tinting the sunroof

I posed this question when I had my tints done. Glazier told me that the problem stemmed from the sunroof being under more direct sunlight (ie: roof is perpendicular to sun). This would therefore prevent him from guranteeing it not to bubble up. Don't know if this is true or not tho.

Re: Tinting the sunroof

As Jalal knows, I have had the sunroof tinted in 5% tint (darkest possible tint.) It is possible to tint it, and I have always had my sunroofs tinted on all my vehicles.

The advantage is in an accident, a metal tint will hold the glass together if it shatters.

Best wishes,

Craig & Joanne

Re: Tinting the sunroof

Hi all i have just read the threads on tinting the sunroof & think I will get mine done as it has been a hot summer this year has anyone had a problem ? Not that I look for problems but are a little wary of what on tint company said to me. Suggesting not to touch it as it could break / split. emoticon

Jalalski do you have a sunroof & if so is it tinted. I was too short to see.

 thanks bob

Re: Tinting the sunroof

Nope Bob, I don't have one on mine. I was tossing between getting a sunroof or the hyper roof rails with lights and decided to go with the latter emoticon
