Engine Revs not dropping off

I've recently picked up an 04 ST, and am suitably impressed with it.

However, there seems to be something a little unusual with it, and I was wondering if they all do this, or just mine.

While taking my foot off the accel and pushing in the clutch to change gears, instead of the revs dropping off immediately, they go up by approximately 100-200rpm for about 2 seconds before dropping off. It's as if I've pushed in the clutch and only drop the accelerator a few seconds later. I'm guessing it has something to do with the drive-by-wire tech that the xtrail has; no more cable pedals.
The annoying part is that it makes gear changes kinda rough.

So my question is: Do other people have this "undocumented feature" on their xtrails too, so i need to adjust my driving style, or is this a fault with my xtrail?

Brendan

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

Brendan,

I noticed this also in a mates exy, but not in my own. Not sure what the cause is, sorry. I originally thought that his clutch was slipping, but it had only done 30,000kms. I am pretty sure this has been covered elsewhere in the forum, just can't find it.

Perhaps a K&N air filter, Iridium plugs and a set of BFG's will help. emoticon

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

Hi Brendan,

You're not the first one to experience the gear change issues and revs increasing slightly. This has been discussed in THIS and according to Nissan seems to be normal for the Manual exy.

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

You need to do the relearn procedures from the electronic service manual in this specific order:
1 pedal released position
2 throttle closed
3 idle air volume
Important:
1 you can do the first two any time
2 the Idle Air has prerequisites ie: engine and trans warmed up, all electrical loads off, air-con off
3 stopwatch

Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning
DESCRIPTION
“Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning” is an operation to learn the fully released position of the accelerator
pedal by monitoring the accelerator pedal position sensor output signal. It must be performed each time
harness connector of accelerator pedal position sensor or ECM is disconnected.
OPERATION PROCEDURE
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
4. Turn ignition switch “ON” and wait at least 2 seconds.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.

Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning
DESCRIPTION
“Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning” is an operation to learn the fully closed position of the throttle valve
by monitoring the throttle position sensor output signal. It must be performed each time harness connector of
electric throttle control actuator or ECM is disconnected.
OPERATION PROCEDURE
1. Make sure that accelerator pedal is fully released.
2. Turn ignition switch “ON” wait at least 10 seconds.
3. Turn ignition switch “OFF” wait at least 10 seconds.
Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound.

Idle Air Volume Learning
DESCRIPTION
“Idle Air Volume Learning” is an operation to learn the idle air volume that keeps each engine within the specific
range. It must be performed under any of the following conditions:
Each time electric throttle control actuator or ECM is replaced.
Idle speed or ignition timing is out of specification.
PREPARATION
Before performing “Idle Air Volume Learning”, make sure that all of the following conditions are satisfied.
Learning will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are missed for even a moment.
Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
 Engine coolant temperature: 70 - 100°C (158 - 212°F)
 PNP switch: ON
 Electric load switch: OFF
(Air conditioner, headlamp, rear window defogger)
On vehicles equipped with daytime light systems, set lighting switch to the 1st position to light
only small lamps.
 Steering wheel: Neutral (Straight-ahead position)
 Vehicle speed: Stopped
 Transmission: Warmed-up
For A/T models without CONSULT-II and M/T models, drive vehicle for 10 minutes.

It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.
It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit
has a malfunction.
1. Perform EC-449, "Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning" .
2. Perform EC-449, "Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning" .
3. Start engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
4. Check that all items listed under the topic “PREPARATION” (previously mentioned) are in good order.
5. Turn ignition switch “OFF” and wait at least 10 seconds.
6. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch “ON” and wait 3 seconds.
7. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
8. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 20 seconds until the MI stops
blinking and turned ON.
9. Fully release the accelerator pedal within 3 seconds after the MI goes off.
10. Start engine and let it idle.
11. Wait 20 seconds.
12. Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifications
13. If idle speed and ignition timing are not within the specification, “Idle Air Volume Learning” will not be carried
out successfully.

This will fix it, or next service get your dealer to do it using the ConsultII unit.

Oh yeah, and it's hard to do! Don't be surprised if it takes you three goes to get the Idle Air process started.

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

Alternatively, take it to the dealer to do the idle re-learn in 10 minutes for 10 bucks emoticon

P.S. Shawn, I hope you didn't spend too much effort typing all this up, as we already have a DIY Guide for this HERE and it is part of the DIY Guides Section of the forum. emoticon

The power of copy and paste.

I thought it would be handy right here in this thread, since it relates so directly to the subject.

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

No worries Shawn, but we can link existing DIY Guide to threads too. Makes it easier to print should one decides to print the information and take it with them to perform the procedure.

Just a thought for the future.

P.S. The service manual has a mistake in one of the steps under the "idle Air Volume Learning" and this mistake has been corrected in the pdf file I posted.

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

wow guys, thanks for the encyclopedia of information on this one, it will be most helpful.

The car is still under warranty until october, but I won't be fitting another service in before then. So, do you think it is worth my while asking nissan to take care of it, or will it be too hard to try to explain to them whats going on and what needs to be done.

Re: Engine Revs not dropping off

Brendan,

The idle re-learn can be performed by any dealer at any time, so just drop-in at your local dealer and explain the situation and they can do it then and there.
