Some ppl I know replace rubber belts every 5 years regardless of mileage, but that's usually when there is $$$$$ if the belt breaks and puts valves into pistons. I once had an alternator belt let go and it took out half the cam timing belt too! 'Serpentine' belts transfer power to just about 'everything' so you could loose power steering and even vacuum assisted braking on some vehicles. Air conditioner and alternator are not so critical. I now also ask "What other damage could it do if it let go?" And if it could take out a "critical" component, I just change them every 5 years or so. They are relatively cheap, or the ones I have had to change were (<$40), from my local auto parts wholesaler I deal with. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Wiz Au)Mon, 15 Jan 2018 10:39:48 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095138,from=rss#post2095138https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2095138,from=rss#post2095138Trying to replace mine (T31) this morning and really struggling. All the right bits removed, but a poor engine bay design isn't helping (gap between pulleys, etc and drive bay is less than the belt width. Belt is Gates 6PK1810, but seems a smidge short. I'm leaving it in the sun for a while as I check the forum for ideas. Maybe the tensioner pulley (factory original) isn't fitted correctly, as even getting the old belt off was more challenging then it should have been. I've done a belt on other cars before, but never struggled like this!nondisclosed_email@example.com (mfeodoroff)Sat, 13 Jan 2018 10:06:50 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094143,from=rss#post2094143https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2094143,from=rss#post2094143On my T31 2.5 petrol CVT the correct belt was 6PK1810. But I'm not gonna trade it in yet. At some point I'm going to replace my old belt, either along the road or in a garage, but when I do I'll let you guys (and girls) know how it worked out with the 2240mm. So btw, you've done a drive belt on an xtrail before right? Do you have to remove the front tire and wheel bay cover to gain access to the belt?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Menno)Tue, 27 Jun 2017 01:19:30 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093997,from=rss#post2093997https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093997,from=rss#post2093997Gates are a very well known and respected brand in Australia I have used Gates Timing Belts and Drive Belts on previous vehicles without any issues. I recently bought a spare drive belt for mine to do sometime in the future and I bought a REPCO branded one as it only cost me $32.75 where as the Gates one was $51.15 (I get Trade prices at Repco) 6PK2250 The 6 is the number of ribs on the belt PK is like the standard width measurement as for the 2240 vs 2250 difference - that is the length overall of the belt in mm.. So, if you have a 2240, it will be 10mm shorter than the correct belt.... It may still fit, it may be a little too short... you will only know once you go to install it... nondisclosed_email@example.com (CaptK)Mon, 26 Jun 2017 23:00:59 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093995,from=rss#post2093995https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2093995,from=rss#post2093995Hi, I just went to Autobarn for a new belt. The owner sold me a brand "Gates", Micro-V AT. He recommended to get the 6PK2240 instead of the 6PK2250. That brand didn't have a 2245 available. It was $60. He said I could return it if I couldn't fit it on... That size should be okay too right? Anyone bought Gates before? It was pretty easy, I'd previously looked in the ESM to see what to do. I used the Dayco of course, from Repco for about $68. Remove all the plastic from the drivers side inner wheel arch that will let you get at the front of the engine - 3 bolts and about 4 clips. You'll also need a torch or flouro work light of some kind and a stumpy screwdriver. First step is to lay down under the car study where the existing belt goes and how the tensioner works from underneath - everything is done from underneath, you can't get at anything from the top. Put a long ring spanner on the tensioner and lever it back, the whole belt will instantly come loose and probably get in the way. Use the stumpy screwdriver you already have in the other hand to put through the holes provided in the tensioner from the back (you'll see what I mean when you try it). I couldn't get the screwdriver in from the front due to space, but back is easy. Rip out the old belt, and in your wonder and amazement at how easy that was on a modern vehicle, promply forget which pullys the belt went around which way! No probs, it's easy to work out. Or print out one of the pics from the ESM or this thread. Whack the new belt in, double check it's all going to seat OK and release the tensioner, dropping your stumpy screwdriver into an inaccessible position on the aircon compressor. Do as the manual suggests - get a spanner or big shifter and turn over the motor a couple of revs (from the bolt on the front of the crank pully, clockwise direction, car out of gear) and watch the belt carefully to make sure it is seated OK on all pullies. Put all the plastic back in place, practise standing up again, and start the engine - have a look in past the alternator and you'll be able to see the belt running smoothly around the tensioner. Easy.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Eggins)Sun, 06 Jul 2008 07:36:27 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002976,from=rss#post2002976https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002976,from=rss#post2002976Thanks guys.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 24 Jul 2007 05:30:16 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002973,from=rss#post2002973https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002973,from=rss#post2002973Jalal you are not looking hard enough mate. Check: Dayco On my old Datsun 1600 with heavily worked 2.1 litre motor and 120 amp alternator, a Dayco belt was the only thing that ever worked properly. Other belts I tried required contant adjusting and always slipped anyway. Bear in mind I was asking a bit much of any belt as it was the standard single V-Belt with higher load and higher constant revs than normal. Probably should have been a wider belt or multi-V, but Dayco fixed it. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Eggins)Wed, 18 Jul 2007 16:43:09 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002707,from=rss#post2002707https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002707,from=rss#post2002707Who makes the Dayco? Here is the section about the drive belt from the service manual. As it states, there is no need to tension the belt, but if the indicator shows it is out of adjustment range or if there are cracks in the belt, it should be replaced.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Tue, 10 Jul 2007 21:03:48 +0000 Re: belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002575,from=rss#post2002575https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002575,from=rss#post2002575While I don't think there's any mention of it requiring "replacement" in the service/maintenance schedule, I'm sure it is an item that would be inspected at service intervals for signs of damage (cracking/drying-out etc) and it may be re-tensioned (by loosening the alternator mounting bolt, levering it out to make the belt tighter, then re-tightening the mounting bolt). Apart from the above, the only other signs that would indicate it needs to be replaced is the battery light illuminating on the dash-board, indicating the belt may have completely broken, meaning the alternator is no longer charging the battery. Note that this dash warning light may also come on if the voltage regulator (part of the alternator) fails. Hope that helps! nondisclosed_email@example.com (basshead)Tue, 10 Jul 2007 20:23:40 +0000 belthttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002573,from=rss#post2002573https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2002573,from=rss#post2002573hi does anyone know if the rubber belt on the alternator for an auto ever have to be changed?nondisclosed_email@example.com (bluexy)Tue, 10 Jul 2007 18:03:28 +0000
