Re: ECU What is it ??
Hi Paul & Maureen,
It stands for "Electronic Control Unit".
It is the one that controls the engine. It contains software that uses inputs from engine sensors, exhaust emission sensors, temperature sensors and a throttle-pedal position sensor to control the amount of fuel injected, the injection timing, the ignition timing (in a petrol engine), and any other features the engine may have such as an electronically controlled throttle, variable valve timing/lift or exhaust-gas recirculation.
Basically, it is the brain of modern cars
You don't need to touch it or re-set it unless you have fitted one of the performance enhancement elements (example: K&N filter)
When you take your car for the scheduled maintenance servicing, the dealer performs this ECU res-set for you and would also check for any error logs that this ECU (brain) may contain.
You can also re-set the ECU manually by either disconnecting the battery overnight (not advisable as you will have to re-enter the radio code again) or do a quick ECU re-set (refer to the DIY Guides section for this procedure)
Other than that, the ECU usually re-sets itself within 2-3 days if it detects any change (example: fitting a K&N filter which will change the air ratio)
The location of the ECU in is behind the passenger side glovebox. You will also see a computer type interface/port in the fuse box area and this is the interface that dealers use to plug in their Consult II (scanning device) to either get data from it or push out new software updates to it.
I hope this answers your question, but what are you planning to do with it?
