5 Speed Auto?

I have just finished a round trip from Adelaide to Coffs Harbour and back towing A bike trailer.

The auto was working like a 5 speed during the run like follows.

First Converter
Second Converter
Third Converter
Overdrive Converter
Overdrive Converter Locked

It spent many Km in Overdrive with the converter unlocked at 100Kph.

I had a Corolla and it had the converter locked over 80 Kph whether in third or overdrive.

Food for thought???

Our Exy also locks-up in both 3rd and 4th but subject to conditions of speed, throttle and transmission temp as shown below from the service manual.

If you were towing the bike trailer, maybe your throttle position was too closed, or not steady enough to lockup the torque converter.
Also maybe the clutch drain filter is blocked or the clutch solenoid is faulty.

Re: 5 Speed Auto?

It was pulling pretty hard. The trailer canopy makes it tow like a brick. A big brick.

On cruise control it wanted to run in 3rd most of the time.

It averaged 14 L/100 Km for the trip.

Might have the dealer have a look at it. It usually locks up fine.

I would say that if the Exy was pulling this hard then your throttle position was too closed for the lock-up circuit to trigger.

If the torque converter locks up when you don't tow at the same speed then I would say all is OK.

Re: 5 Speed Auto?

First up, I must admit to spend way too much time pondering what my automatic transmission should be doing, instead of ignoring it and letting it get on with its own business.

That said, has anyone actually detected their transmission torque converter locking in 3rd gear when the overdrive is switched off?

You definitely notice it lock up in 4th with the overdrive switched on (ie. you know the torque convertor is locked when you press the accelerator a bit and the revs don't rise).

The excert from the workshop manual posted above by Kev indicates that the torque convertor should lock in 3rd when the overdrive switch is off, but I am yet to experience it.

My old VR commodore would lock in third when gear selector was on 3 (rather than D), but the X-Trail auto seems to behave more like a VL Commodore I had years ago (the one with the Nissan motor) that only locked up when the overdrive was on.

Re: 5 Speed Auto?

Hi Andrew,

I can't say I have noticed mine lockup in 3rd.
I would presume there is a different set speed and throttle opening for 3rd than 4th to lockup the torque converter but I cannot find any reference to it in the service manual.

Maybe Taylor might be able to give us an answer on these with his Nissan experience emoticon

Re: 5 Speed Auto?

I was on the highway recently, and I am now pretty sure the torque convertor does lock up in 3rd when the overdrive is switched off. At 110kph the engine is doing about 2500rpm in 4th, or about 3700rpm in third with the overdrive switched off going up a slight incline. I still have not noticed it lock up in 3rg around town, so maybe it only locks up in third with the overdrive off at higher speeds (100 - 110kkph)?

An extra gear or two would be nice of the highway.
