G'day

What a complicated website!! No doubt I will get used to it.

We have a 2003 Xtrail ST as a daily driver in the Mid North of SA. Our real 4by is a GQ Patrol.

I am a bit concerned about a report that the butterfly screws in the inlet manifold can work loose and get sucked in to the engine. Some research on Google confirms this.

Have any members here had such problems?

Cheers

Spinifex

I suppose as a new member you are being confronted by all the threads having "New" icons on the main page.
The best thing to do at this early stage is to go to the main page of the firum and click the "Mark All Forums As Read" at the top of the page. This will remove all the "New" icons from all threads and from then on let you see the new posts as they come on.

In regards to the forum thread layout, it has been organised to best allow navigation directly to the topic you may be interested in, rather than show most recent posts as some forums do. This approach seems to reduce the amount of searching for a topic of interest which is what most of us here use the forum for.

And in speaking of searching, the Site Search function is a very quick way of finding previous posts on any topic of interest. If it does not find something then feel free to start a new post in the relevant topic thread where we can all try to help you with a problem or gain from any knowledge you may wish to pass on to us.

Glad to have you as a member.

Re: New Member from S.A.

I think Spinifex's comment was directed at the registration process and the requirement to make a post in the "Introductions" section of the forum before being able to post anywhere else.

There are reasons behind this slight "complication" and new members will only get inconvenienced once at the time of registration, but it will help all members of the forum know a bit more details about the new comers (their location and ride type) and it will ensure that all members are listed in the Welcome/Introductions page for future and quick reference. This in turn will help all members answer questions more accurately.

Example: If you were to be an international member asking a question about obtaining roof racks, there will be little help to you if I was to direct you to the local 4WD shop in Sydney emoticon (I wouldn't know that you're located in Mexico for example)

Spinifex,
Welcome to the forum mate. Everything you ever wanted to know about the mighty exy is right at your fingertips. As for the dreaded butterfly screws, don't get too concerned about that yet mate. You have more important things to research, like maxxing the performance of your vehicle.

Grab yourself a big cuppa and start reading... emoticon

posticon Butterfly screws

Thanks everyone for your replies. The butterfly screw issue came to me via ExplorOz Forum which I frequent too much. Someone posted that they had had a problem. I then Googled some more research and finally found you blokes.

We had our local mechanic check the screws this morning. None were loose but he undid them anyway and then applied Locktite and retightened them. He fitted another gasket in the manifold system as well. The exy belongs to SWMBO and she wanted it fixed as we would rather not find out after the event. Haven't got the bill yet but should be around the $120 mark.

As far as the complicated website remark goes...lol...I guess I am too used to ExplorOz and didn't mean it as a criticism.

Our Xtrail was bought 2nd hand ex Hertz Rental with 26,000km on the clock. Bought it through a country dealer. It now has done 61,000km and runs very sweetly. It is basically a town car and commuter and isn't used for any 4x4 stuff but the AWD mode is handy for dirt roads in the country. SWMBO loves it to death!!!

Cheers

Spinifex

I think you probably read my thread in the ExplorOz forum. When this was going on, I was hitting almost every forum on the planet to warn other owners of this problem. The treatment from you mechanic is unreal. I wish there more like them. Good luck with the xtrail and this thread. It doesn't take too long to work it out. emoticon

Butterfly screws

Yes,Brett, and many thanks for the warning.

We live in a small country town and we all know one another here. I do most of my own stuff on the Patrol but the Xtrail is too complicated for me and I let our mechanic do the work. I actually printed all the diagrams off the internet referring to the butterfly screws and gave them to our mechanic for evaluation so he was clear what I was talking about.

Cheers

The link has now been fixed in the guide.

You can also make some test posts to see that everything is working fine with your signature and avatar. You can do so HERE

Give us a yell if you need any help.
