Re: First Caravan Tow with the Exy

Interesting thread to read up on. I am interested if anyone did any offroad towing with a boat or camper trailer (sand, dirt roads with corrugations). I am thinking of hiring an offroad trailer to try it out and maybe after that purchasing one emoticon All I see are the big V8 cruisers towing that kind of equipment emoticon

Re: First Caravan Tow with the Exy

Hi All,

Towing a 1200kg fully laden pop top with tow ball weight of 120kg with an auto 2006 model.

Although not particularly worrying, I did notice a drop on the rear of the exy when the van was hooked up, a bit more than what I would have liked to keep the van level. I had Pedders springs (heavier duty than the Nissan ones - thicker gauge coil) fitted and this fixed the problem with no noticeable difference in the ride with or without the van.

I do not use WDH's on the vehicle and have driven 50,000 kgss like this with no problems with level or sway etc.

First Caravan Tow with the Exy

I have a T31 2008 auto petrol Ti and have not been all that impressed with the towing and fuel consumption. I tow a new coromal F400 camper which loaded would be around 1.5t. Although the exy did ok on flat roads, it struggled up small rises and through the Mt Mee Range (Qld) and the fuel consumption was terrible. we specifically bought the T31 (with dealer fitted towbar) over the others from new as we tow a ski boat and the camper but I believe that Nissan have overrated the towing capacity. I didn't measure the exact fuel consumption but it was around 300km's for a tank..... This concerns me when we planned to travel in the outback...

The T31 is a great car to drive and comfortable but I am now having second thoughts about our decision and looking to upgrade to a better tow vehicle which is rathering disappointing.

Regards

Scott

Thats pretty bad economy, only getting 300kms.
The brakes weren't on on the caravan were they.

Re: First Caravan Tow with the Exy

Just completed at trip asound Tasmania pulling a 1.3 t Jayco Expanda with a towball weight of 120kg (measured with a bathroom scale). The Exy was fine on the flats and high speed hills such as on the midland hwy. On the tight bends and steep river valleys of the west coast the CVT struggled up the low speed hills. It would stay at around 2000 RPM and struggle at 40 km/h without changing down. Had to kick it across to manual and then down to get the revs to 3000 where it would start to pick up speed.
Averaged around 13.5 L/100 km for the whole trip. Averaged 12.3 L/100km on the run from Launceston to Hobart at 90 km/r. The fuel usage figures are adjusted because the speedo reads 7.5% under the speed indicated by our navigator.
Had a problem with the indicators. With the van attached I had to flick them off and on up to 4 times to get them to work - a real pain in the backside. Never had this sort of problem with any other vehicle!

Re: First Caravan Tow with the Exy

I think that they are standard globes but I'm not sure. The caravan is a 2005 Jayco Expanda, so they should be fairly standard. My Subaru certainly had no problems with them. Will be selling the caravan soon because I have worked out that for 16 nights out or less per year, staying in a cabin works out cheaper.

Re: First Caravan Tow with the Exy

Hi All

Just back from 3 weeks at port fairy

Towed a Jayco Swan, with 3 bikes on the back, plus a hobie outback kayak on the roof racks of the exy

On the trip down from Melbourne we averaged 10.7l/100km at about 90-95kmh. Quite impressive.

Pushed a little harder on the way home 11.3/100km at 100-105kmh.

For those that do not know the run from Melbourne to Port Fairy via the Hamilton highway is pretty flat.

The exy towed far better than the previous tow vehicle (Mitsubishi 380). Pulled the van along comfortably in 6th gear and only occasionly would I have to engage 5th.

Overall car performed faultlessly. Love the TL manual

G'day PT

Sorry 'bout such a late reply .... we hired an off-road camper trailer (from DiscoverOz Camper Hire) and travelled 8,000kms around central Australia, last July. Most of the trip was, unfortunately, on the black stuff. But the majority of the trip from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon was across deeply corrugated, bull-dust covered tracks (with lots of large irregular shaped rocks thrown in for good measure).

Our exy (T31 Ti CVT) handled the towing exceptionally well and the camper trailer sat comfortably behind us (as it should) for the whole trip (meaning ... it didn't bounce around like a small box trailer).

Namatjira Drive (from Alice Springs) was pretty rough at places (refer pic), and whilst we were only doing a maximum of 80kmh, we were still overtaken (by a Mitsubishi L300 emoticon) doing break-neck speeds emoticon

I hope this information isn't too late for you. If you need any further info, please feel free to ask.
