Muffler replacement

Hey guys, new to this forum making my first post.

My mother took her xtrail to Rockdale Nissan today for its 100,000km service. The car has been serviced there all its life and we have made numerous reports everytime the car has been serviced that there is unusal noise during acceleration under load around the 3000rpm mark. Sounds like an exhaust related noise to me. when the car comes back for service the noise is always fixed but usually comes back after a week or so (i dont know what they do to fix the problem but they tell my mum that the have "tightened the exhaust", whatever that means).
so anyway today they replaced the muffler for $330 plus $50 for fitting (rough pricing).
as usual my mum didnt question them as to why it needed replacing but brought it to my attention once she got home.
Ive since searched on the forum and it seems like this is a common fault on the exy?
I find it a bit of a coincidence that this was the first time the car has been service outside of warranty and it is now that they decide to replace the muffler when this should have probably been done ages ago.
In your opinion do you think that Nissan should wear the cost of the muffler?

Evan

Re: Muffler replacement

Hi Evan,

Rockdale Nissan were the ones to replace my muffler on the spot when it developed a leak at around the 45,000kms mark and they also confirmed that most Series I xtrails had the exact same leak and rattles and changed many of them.

I am not sure why it has taken them so long to finally decide to change it, but I guess your mother might not have complained enough about the annoying noise it has made.

There can be many causes for muffler leaks especially after so many km's on the clock.

Your chances of recovering the cost of the muffler outside of the warranty period are very slim, as there was no official recall for it.

The muffler problem should have been addressed while under warranty though.

Re: Muffler replacement

I thought it may be slim of me getting the costs reimbursed Jalal.

It just annoys me that the complaint of the noise was made EVERYTIME the car was in for service after roughly the 40,000km service.

i just pulled out the old service invoices, on at least three of them it says
" checked noise/vibe on cold start or 3000rpm"
"checked and tightened exhaust"

this shows that the problem has been recorded, im hoping that with this i will be able to make the point that they should have replaced this a while ago.

Worth me trying?

Re: Muffler replacement

Yes Evan.

If it is clearly recorded on the service invoice and noted as such, then ask Michael (at Rockdale) to look at the option of re-reimbursing some or all of the cost associated with the replacement of the muffler. He can make decision about it and may help you. The guys over there are pretty good, so am not sure why this muffler wasn't replaced earlier.

Anyway, give it a go since the complaint is noted on the invoice/s. Take all of the invoices with you and speak to Michael (the service manager)

Re: Muffler replacement

Hi Evan.

Sounds like your description of the noise fairly closely matches my symptoms...

I know it was several months ago now, but I was wondering if you could remember if the new muffler rectify the problem?

Was it just the muffler (at the very rear of the exhaust) they replaced, or was there some other section(s) of the exhaust replaced?
