Where to get new standard wheels?

Hi All,

Can anyone suggest where to try for one or two additional, standard 15" rims for my 2005 ST. I need at least one extra spare for a round Australia trip but if the price is okay I figured I could get two for storage on the roof (yes, weight might be an issue) and leave the exisitng spare where it is so I never have to unpack the back of the wagon to get out a spare.

All suggestions welcome.

Dino.

Re: Where to get new standard wheels?

There's a few I can think of off the top of my head:

1. eBay
2. your local tyre shops that sell alloy wheels - it's possible they might havea set of factory wheels and tyres if they've recently had another customer upgrade their X-Trail's wheels. It might pay to phone around to a few of them, and if your trip is a while off, even leave your details with them so they can call you back if they come across them.
3. This forum's "wanted to buy" section
4. Try some local wrecking yards.
5. Add a reply to Jalal's "wreckers shopping list" thread emoticon

Re: Where to get new standard wheels?

Considering the weight limit of the xtrail roof, I wouldn't be storing 2 tyres up there. The extra weight will also increase the roll-over possibilities 10 fold. Why not just carry a puncture repair kit. I used one of these kits a few years ago and swear by them.

REPAIR KIT

If you must carry an extra spare, just carry the tyre on the roof (and not the rim). You can use a set of TYREPLIERS to get the tyre on and off.

I have seen a system in the xtrail, whereby the false floor was removed and two tyres were placed in this cavity, standing on their sides, running lenght-ways. (hard to picture, sorry) Then all the other gear was packed around them. I will try and find it, but it appeared to work well.

Stay away from packing too much on the roof. TOO DANGEROUS !!!

 Good luck with the trip.

Re: Where to get new standard wheels?

Considering that the approximate weight of the rims & tyres is around 25Kg (so that's a total of 50Kg for two spares) and that the carrying load capacity of the factory roof racks and mounting points is 70Kg, I can't see a problem as long as the 2 spare tyres are positioned one after the other (not on top of each other type of thing)

Although the weight is under the maximum allowed, as Brett said it increases the centre of gravity point which will reduce the maximum slope angle the Exy will handle without roll-over danger.

Dino, are you going to tackle any cross-terain hills or just outback driving across long remote areas ?

I agree Kev, however this danger is present with any load rating you put on the roof of any car. It all depends on the type of driving you'll be doing. For highway runs, I can't see a problem.

Re: Where to get new standard wheels?

Thank you all for comments.

I will be doing some limited off road travelling but mostly I'll be travelling on gravel and made roads.

Surely if the roof is rated to 70kg's, putting 70kg'd on the roof won't add significantly to risk of rolling over?

Thank you, Dino.

Re: Where to get new standard wheels?

Sorry, been away OS for quite a while and missed this thread.

Not sure if you sorted it out Dino but I made a couple of calls to Nissan dealers and found some for mine no problems.

I paid $50 a rim from Cleveland Nissan in Brisbane. They also throw a lot out the dealer told me cos some people order new mags when they buy the new exy.

You just have to get in before the scrap metal guy does his pickup.

Dino,
Do you need a 15" toyo tyre when you find your rim or are you running slightly larger tyres than factory?

I'm looking at selling my toyo spare which has never seen the road when i change all 5 tyres some time in August.

Let us know of your plans. emoticon
