Best practice to store tyres?

Hi Guys,

I haven't had the chance to store tyres that are attached to rims/alloys before, so now with the spare set of alloys and off-road tyres I have, I was wondering what is the best way to store them if they're not being used for a long time...inflated, deflated, standing-up or on their side?

Any help and guidance will be appreciated.

Re: Best practice to store tyres?

Jalal,

We often store 'winter' tyres at work and stick to this proven formula. This is the same for low profile HWP tyres and also A/T truck tyres.

 1. Take the pressures down to about 20psi. This alleviates the pressure on the bead and keeps the tyre soft.
 2. Spray entire tyre with armoural or similar product to keep the tyre rubber soft.
 3. Stack tyres on thier side.
 4. Look at stacking your tyres like a sandwich. Piece of ply on the floor, first tyre on top, then ply, then tyre... The ply keep the rubber apart and stop them sticking and damaging the side-wall.
 5. Either buy a single rubber tyre cover for the top one to keep the dust and grit out, or drape a sheet over the entire stack.
 6. If they are being stored for a while, rotate position each month of so.
 7. It also helps to pump each tyre back up to the nominal pressure each month of so also, to alleviate any memory in the rubber. Also pushes any flat spots out.

Thanks Brett, that is very helpful indeed. Is it best to store them indoors or outdoors (under cover)?

Jalal:

I made a post on this some time ago, with illustrations.....may have been in the other forum...have a look.

Brett has it spot-on.

Re indoor/outdoor - the key is a "cool" place with a "constant" temperature.

I do not store mine outdoors - not even in the shed - gets too hot in there.

I have a 3 foot crawl space in my basement and it's always "cool" in there.

The only part of Brett's suggestion that I do not follow is the re-inflation / deflation - that's a lot like work.

I also use "Seasonal Tire Totes" (can be seen in other post) which eliminates the need for the pieces in between the tires.

Tires are a costly investment - it's a good idea to look after them.

Cheers = Roger

Thanks Roger,

I like the tyre totes idea, except I can't find them here. I'll look harder.

For everyone else, here is what a tyre totes is.
