Re: Throttle body spacer
Hi Brett,
I have read about this mod and would put in the same basket as the "hicolne".
I don't think you'll get any power gains from doing that.
Having said that, porting the TB would most probably achieve some gains.

Re: Throttle body spacer
Hi Brett,
How do they claim this increase is gained ?
You have stirred my curiousity.

Re: Throttle body spacer
Kev,
Here is what is being claimed about the TB Spacer:
quote:
Throttle Body Spacers
One of the most commonly advertised devices for improved horsepower and fuel efficiency is a throttle body spacer. They are relatively inexpensive devices and simple to install. In theory, the devices work by creating turbulence in the air intake stream. Fuel becomes more volatile when rendered aerosol and turbulent air flow allegedly makes this transition easier, but the claims are met with a great deal of skepticism.
The rationale behind this skepticism is the engine computer itself. An ECU is designed to continually monitor engine performance and emissions output. While the device may initially increase engine performance, the O2 sensors will detect the increased emissions from an improved burn and adjust accordingly to reduce emissions. This is afterall, the primary purpose of the ECU, to reduce emissions for environmental protection. Therefore, after the ECU adapts to the presence of the throttle body spacer, a vehicle's performance will normalize. Older engines using a carburetor in lieu of an ECU may actually benefit from a throttle body spacer, but not a computer controlled engine.
Now if you compare the highlighted extract which describes the theory of a TB spacer with the Hiclone (search for it on our forum) you'll find the claims almost identical.
Another money scamming gadget I would say, just like the rest of the so called "fuel savers"!

Re: Throttle body spacer
Don't you just love people who rely on theory ?
They always seem to forget how parts interract to totally change how a single part works.
Altough I am University educated, I've always been taught that theory is just a good starting point, never the complete answer.

Re: Throttle body spacer
Fair enough Brett and I look forward to your findings as there are many subjects out there covering this mod and the negative feedback outweighs any positive ones when it comes to adding this TBS to a stock standard car/engine.
I had no doubts whatsoever about the extractors and twins and was 100% sure that there will be gains from doing it, I was just waiting to find someone reliable enough to have them manufactured based on our spec

Re: Throttle body spacer
Hi Brett,
Found this quote on another forum ...
quote: Spacers don't do a thing for our kind of intake, because all you're doing is swirling the air as it enters the plenum. It still has to travel down the runners at that point, and the vortex motion is lost at that point. Besides, the fuel and air mix immediately prior to entering the intake valves on the motor, so you aren't going to be able to atomize the fuel better anyway (especially with a part like this).
These things can work on carb'd vehicles since you're spinning up an already combined mixture (the spacer also keeps the carb from heating up so much).
Since our engine also has the injectors after the plenum and just before the cylinder valves, I think the comment applies to us as well.

Re: Throttle body spacer
Brett,
I'm inclined to believe that as well given the fact that this device is doing something similar to what the Hiclone is meant to do, and we all know the results of the Hiclone test on this forum.
Save your money mate and spend it on either a Throttle Body bore out or even a new Throttle Body entirely with a larger entry. Or maybe upgrade your injectors to something more decent, that's probably the next step.
