Re: To overdrive or not

On a flat stretch, full tank of gas, 2 pax up, minimal headwind and with A/C on I can sit on 1,500rpm in OD with lock. Engine is still tractable and will accelerate slowly from there if need be without locking out.

I am running 95ron in the tank.

Re: To overdrive or not

I am running my X-Trail around Sydney mainly with the overdrive on. I do this because the auto only seems to lock up the torque converter in 3rd when the overdrive is on (see my comments under the "5 Speed Auto?" topic), and it kicks down readily enough when needed. However, it is a bit annoying around 60kph on a gradual incline with the auto hunting between 3rd and 4th, but the engine is tractable enough to pull 4th with lock up from 60kph on the flat.

My only concern with running with the overdrive on all the time is wear on the transmission. I remember that some old 4 speed autos like in the VL commodore used to wear out earlier if overdrive was left on. However, I haven’t seen any reports of X-Trail transmission failures in this forum, and I expect most people probably leave the overdrive on.

Re: To overdrive or not

The big hint Andrew is if the User Manual mentions any minimum speed restrictions for having the overdrive on. If not, then all should be good.

Like most others, I would like to see the lock-up happen in 3rd when "cruising" (no acceleration) and then I would leave the overdrive off in normal city driving as the responsiveness is much better in 3rd than 4th.

Re:

Sorry to rehash an old thread but I simply found this by searching, Its not something I'd given thought to very much.

This is my first Auto Vehicle and by (my) interpretation of what is said in owners manual it's pretty much OK to drive with O/D on unless climbing a long or steep hill otherwise you will get what another member mentioned already with the Trans "hunting" back and forth between 3rd and 4th gears.

I have been tying the O/D on and off around town last few days and have noticed it does seem to let the engine labour a bit less on inclines

Re: To overdrive or not

Hi Jason,

Do a test with one tank using OD off when under 70 and then another tank using OD on and see what the fuel consumption difference is.

I don't use OD in city traffic as the accelerator response is better.
Remember, with OD on in city traffic you need to push the accelerator further to get it to change down and this uses more fuel so what you save you would probably use when this happens.

Re:

Hey thanks for that Kev, Yeah from my basic read of the Owners manual it seemed a little undescriptive to say only turn OD off when on hill climbs and I have noticed that OD off lets the car rev higher which translates to more responsiveness.

Will give your suggestions a go
