Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Hi,
The orange MIL engine light came on today and stayed on. It drives well, and when I checked for codes with my scanner it came up with 0420. I don't know if its an old code, but when I cleared it, the MIL light went out. Its done 138,000ks and have previously changed the cam and crank sensors. I can't find that code number in the list on the forum. Does anyone know what it is?
Thanks

Re:

Hi Eric,

The error code is P0420 and it relates to a catalytic converter failure which sometimes also means that one or both of the Oxygen Sensors are faulty.

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Thanks Jalal, The oxygen sensors are probably due for a change anyway, so I'll change them and keep an eye on that light. Hopefully the catalytic converter is ok. I might also clean the MAF sensor while I'm at it.

Re:

Just make sure you reset the ECU and clear the codes after you change the sesnsors.

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Hi, whats the best way to remove the MAF sensor. Remove the throttle body and possibly damage the gaskets or reach around the back and remove just the sensor?
Thanks

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Eric,

if you are referring to the MAF from the air filter, this is easy enough to remove with a 5mm torx screw driver with out touching the throttle body.

From experience, the throttle body has pressurised fuel lines attached to it which i found out is not a good idea to play with.

Not sure if and what sensors are hidden in the throttle body itself.

cheers,
Tom

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Hi Tom, thanks for your reply. After having a good look at the throttle body, I noticed the maf sensor next to the air cleaner on the intake tube, and removed it very easily. Its a job I'll probably do more often now I know how to do it. Thanks again.

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

Eric,

Curious to know if this sensor was what was causing the ML light to come on?

Re: Malfunction Indicator (Dashboard Engine Warning Light)

No it wasn't as it has come on again since. I think the catalytic convertor may be blocked up. The temperature measured with an infrared heat sensor gun before the cat, is a lot hotter than after the cat. It should be the other way around from what I have seen and read. That plays havoc with the post oxygen sensor causing the light to turn on. I might run the lacquer thinners through the system to clean out the catalytic convertor and go from there.
