Re: Nissan roof racks - poor finish (any options ?)

Hello

I don't see a gap it sits quite flush.
i) There is a 'front' sticker on the bottom of the front cross bar so I assume they put that on correctly
ii) There is a sticker with a 6 digit serial number ending 30-87-05 (I think)again on the bottom side of the cross bar

iii) Nissan signage above every bolt for the cross bar

iv) A Nissan sticker on the back cross bar

Anyway, a picture tells a thousand words, I have taken a few, how do I attach them ?

Re: Nissan roof racks - poor finish (any options ?)

I just had a closer look at mine and they're the same as Brett's - there is a gap at the bottom and the top is not flush with the top of the roof rails. Mine were "thrown in as a freebie" when we bought ours - over two years ago! Ours was bought shortly after the Series 2 stock was delivered to the dealership, so maybe our roof racks are the older Series 1 stock? Mine look nothing like Matt's (even though his attached photo is very difficult to make out, they are obviously a much better fit than Brett's and mine).

So can we now safely assume Nissan gets rid of old "spare parts" stock when they advertise new X-Trails with freebies thrown in?

I can't find any "L" or "R" or arrows on mine as Matt has mentioned (more proof that mine are Series 1 items).

Rich,

In your case, I think Nissan did give you their old stock indeed.

I have started seeing the new style Nissan roof racks around June 2004.

I have just checked the Members Profile page on the main site and can confirm that there are members of our forum with Series II that have the new style roof racks and here are a couple.

And Shane76

You can see that the roof racks are no longer curved to the back and they actually stand straight-up on the roof rails. Very similar design to the Rhino Sportz I have.

If your roof racks have a gap, they're the "old" stock.

Re: Nissan roof racks - poor finish (any options ?)

Ok, it may not be the factory finish I was after, but I have managed to cover the gap between the roof rack 'support' and the roof rail. Nothing a bit of black silastic can't fix. Had some left over from the 'upper brake light' mod.

I actually took it for a pre and post run on the highway to see if there was any noise difference and the simple answer is YES. It appears the extra noise was being caused by the wind passing through the tiny gap.

So I won't have to cover the inner missing piece which allows the inside of the channel to be open then Brett ?

Brett,

The noise is actually caused more by the "inner" gap, rather than the two small ones you have covered.

I thought the same thing mate, but after many trips on the nearby highway, the 'whistling' noise reduced a lot by simply covering the outside gaps. The main roofrack noise was the same, but all roofracks give a little noise.

As for the inside section, I am looking at covering them with some black plastic. Just got to work out how to secure it to the inside of the roof rails.

Anybody got some black racing tape I can use emoticon

Brett,
I know exactly the type of tape you are thinking of.
I had the same cloth-based plastic tape but in green. Like duct tape.
Great idea, and being on the inside of the rails it won't matter if the black does not exactly match.
