Dirty Marks

Hey Guys,

I picked up my exy last week and seems as though I have dirty marks on the rear of the clear plastic which is in front of the speedo.

I assume they are on the rear of the plastic as I have tried to wipe them off with a soft rag with no luck. They look like dry water marks???

Firstly, how would they get there? (The chick at the Nissan dealer reckons the speedo is one piece and is sealed, correct???)

Secondly, if they do turn out to be on the front, should I use metho or similar to clean it or will this damage the plastic?

Only other thing so far is the CD stacker that jammed up, which Nissan have taken out and sent off for repair. I know alot of you guys would say "just replace it", (which we will do eventually) but we've only had the car a week and am a bit dirty that it's happened so soon.

Thanks,
Chambo

Re: Dirty Marks

Hi Chambo,

That must be annoying. You can take the dash cluster apart and even take off the front plastic.

What series do you have? For a series II you can just pull on the top of the grey plastic surround and it comes out quite easily, you will then see 4 screws holding the dash cluster unit in. Be careful unscrewing these as they might fall down the inside of the dash! Suggest using a magnetic scredriver. I think the clear plastic front then unclips (from memory).

Would suggest washing with soapy water not any chemical, being plastic it could become foggy.

HTH

Re: Dirty Marks

Cheers for the quick reply.

I've got an 02 Ti S1.

I can't imagine it would be that difficult, especially for the dealer, to remove the cluster and give it a wipe for me. When I have the stacker re-installed I'll push the matter again.

I would try it myself, but like I said, I've only had the beast for a week and the wife would be really impressed if I snapped something (after all it is hers). Think I'll leave it to the dealer.

Cheers

Re: Dirty Marks

Yeah, should be an easy job for a dealer. Jalal did take his series I dash cluster apart to change the lighting colour, so I am sure he can chip in here.

Re: Dirty Marks

For series I, removing the cluster is a 10 minute job. I can do that now blind-folded because I have taken it apart so many times LOL emoticon

I can't believe the lady at Nissan would claim that is all one piece! I'm not sure what type of training Nissan gives these guys to work at dealerships and answer customer queries!!

Has she wondered how one would change a blown dash light? emoticon

Anyway mate, if you still wanna try and do it your self and impress the wife in the process, try the following:

1. Unclip the two silver trims that go along the upper side of the dash (one under the passenger airbag and the other under the driver's side glovebox) these will come off easily as soon as you stick a thin screw driver and pop one side off.

2. Remove 2 screws that are holding the grey/black cluster lid that surrounds the cluster itself then pull toward yourself.

3. Four screws will be revealed holding the cluster in place, take these off and then pull the cluster gently toward you and unclip the harnesses.

4. Now you should have the cluster in your hands and you will see where you can unclip the clear cover.

I have no idea where the water marks have come from but being a 2002 model, the previous owner must have sprayed the cluster with a cleaning agent and it must have got through the zeroing push pin (for the trip meter). A possibility.

I hope it helps.

Re: Dirty Marks

Thanks Jalal,

Well I thought I'd give it a go and whattya know, came off, no probs all without the wife even knowing.

On closer inspection it seems the marks are on the front! Think you maybe right in one respect about previous owner spraying something on it, but whatever it is, its hard to get off. Ended up using some polish made for plastics which improved it, but its not great.

Being the perfectionist I am, I think I might give the wreckers a call and see if I can replace it with something better (now I know how easy it is to get off).

Cheers for ya help.

Re: Dirty Marks

Chambo3 suggest you read blown head gasket thred and keep an eye on cooling system i spoke to Nissan Aus and they think that at the 80k service when the coolant is drained and replaced, any casting sand in the block could be drawn into the radiator, mine is an 01 now has 100k up, this is off your thred but if it saves you a head gasket or cooling problems!!

Re: Dirty Marks

Hi Chambo, I also have this problem, It looks like someone sprayed coca cola inside the screen,Nissan tell me that the clear plastic screen is not obtainable seperately from the cluster assembly, this sounds ridiculous, but now that I know how to get it out (from Jamal) I might try and get one made from perspex, it can't be that hard.
Cheers,
