Too much drag/ brakes applying slightly?

Hi all,

I picked up mt exy a couple of weeks ago and have come across a problem I would love an answer to.

Vehicle slows down, excessively when cruising (cruise control not on) or if you take your foot off the accelerator. I know the car should eventually slow down but every auto I have ever driven usually rolls on at the same speed, slowing down very gradually on a dead straight road. The exy seems to be slowing too quickly as if the brakes are slightly on (my foot in nowhere near the pedal), I was also thinking it could have something to do with the cruise control system as i believe that system also limits your speed going downhills.

I would love some help with this problem as it is starting to drive me nuts, apart from that the car is fantastic:-
Stock '03 Ti-l with sunroof.

P.S. problem is intermittent which makes diagnosing even harder and as an ex mech I can usually diagnose this stuff alright, albiet older cars.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Too much drag/ brakes applying slightly?

I think I know the dragging you are talking about... mine does it occasionally as if it were hunting gears... sometimes a little randomly... but not down hill from memory.

Might be a silly question but you aren't driving with overdrive off are you? It will definately drag if that was the case.

I'll experiment a bit next time I get in.

Re: Too much drag/ brakes applying slightly?

No I haven't got the overdrive off, I've also driven with cruise off, a/c off, climate control off and like you said it can be very random. I'm wondering if there may be a problem with the brake calipers not fully releasing sometimes. It feels the same as if the a/c compressor has just cut in even though the a/c is off.

It is very sporadic and i can't seem to get it to happen when i want it to, it's just hit and miss.

I told the local dealer about the fault prior to buying the car and mentioned that i wanted it fixed before i would buy it, they adjusted the idle and reckon they fixed it but it is going back to them tommorow, hopefully at their cost.

Cheers
Paul

Re: Too much drag/ brakes applying slightly?

It could be the lock-up torque converter and if so is quite normal.

Once in lock-up mode (after some constant speed driving), it does not release straight away and the engine has a slight braking effect.
If your engine speed has been constantly changing like in jerky traffic, the torque converter does not lock-up and there is little braking effect from the engine.
You should be able to see a slight dip in RPM when the torque converter locks-up while maintaining a constant speed.

Here are the conditions for the torque converter to lock-up in a Series 1.

Re: Too much drag/ brakes applying slightly?

O.K, I got my car back yesterday and after testing everthing Nissan said there was no fault, at least that is what the computer was saying.
However, I spoke to the mech that went on a road test with me and he advised me of something they did find.

Within the auto tran there is an engine braking control module and mine was set to off, therefor it didn't know what it was doing, on/off/on/off. After setting the control module to on the car is heaps better, no more confusion over what it wants to do.

The guys at nissan say they didn't even know about this control module within the auto tran parameters so they also learnt something new.

If anyone has the repair manual they may be able to confirm this control module.
Anyway i'm just glad it runs heaps better and i didn't have to pay for the repair.

Cheers

I suspect when they say "module" that its actually part of the program in the Auto control unit. I think it would only be accessible using a ConsultII.
