Re: Power Window Relay

No problems Jamie. You can fix me up for the unit when I see you.

Love to go to Bribie with you while up there. Should still be around then.
The wife has been to Bribie quite a bit in her earlier days (being a Brissy girl) and we have discussed a day trip to Bribie or maybe spend some time up at Rainbow Beach.
I'll have my laptop with me on hols so when we're intown I'll catchup.

Re: Power Window Relay

Ok folks, here is my version. As I said in an earlier post; it is essentially the same as Kev's but a different layout. It uses the same circuit as Kev's DYI.

Mine does not feature the LED, but there is plenty of room if this is required.

I'll cut and paste sections from Kev's just to keep the instructions similar.

Parts required...
- 2 x 2200uF 16V Electrolytic Capacitor
- 2 x 10k Resistors (Brown, Black, Orange, Gold)
- 2N2222A NPN Transistor
- 2 x 1N4752 Diodes
- Versa Strip Board (DSE H5614)
- 2 x 6.4mm Male Spade Connectors
- 2 x 6.4mm Female Insulated Spade Connectors
- 2 x 4.5mm Male Spade Connectors
- 2 x 4.5mm Female Spade Connectors
- 2 x PCB Mount Terminal Block (3 screw)(DSE P4824)

Total cost of the circuit only is approx. $11.

The good thing about this Versa Board is that it has alpha numeric grid references, which may come of use to some people... see image below for info.

Parts layout and grid reference;

Image Image

Solder the components in as per the grid reference. Please note the six cuts in the PCB tracks that need to be made as detailed in the image.

Take the power window relay out of its socket.

Cut one 150mm length of 25A wire. On this; terminate a 6.4mm male spade lug on one end. If available, terminate the other end with a boot lace lug (applies to all wires below). Alternatively, just twist. Insert the twisted end into P3.

Cut two 150mm lengths of 5A wire. I've used a earth coloured wire for identification only. On these; terminate a 4.8mm male spade lug on one end. Insert one wire into P1 and the other wire into P6.

Cut one 50mm length of 25A wire. On this; terminate a 6.4mm female spade lug on one end. This end goes to terminal 3 of the relay. The twisted end is inserted into P4.

Cut two 50mm lengths of 5A wire. On these; terminate 4.8mm female spade lugs on one end. Insert one wire into P2, and the other end of this on to terminal 1 of the relay. The other wire should go into P5 and its other end plugs on to terminal 2 of the relay.

Make one final 150mm length 20A wire. One end is to have a 6.4mm male spade lug and the other is to have a 6.4mmm female spade lug. The female end plugs in to terminal 5 of the relay.

Once you have connected all wires to the PCB, insert the board into a suitable box. I was lucky enough to have a blown up power supply hanging around so I did not purchase anything for this. The board is 80mm(L) x 50mm(W) x 20mm(H).

The overall circuit should look something like this (relay tucked underneath);

Image

Once the containment box is sorted, insert the wires into the relay socket as follows;

P1 - Terminal 1
P3 - Terminal 3
P6 - Terminal 2

And the other end of the stand alone wire is to go to Terminal 5 of the socket.

Place the assembly out of sight to the right or left of the fuse panel and secure if desired.

And you're away! This circuit will give approximately 3 minutes and 20 seconds of operation time.

Re: Power Window Relay

Well done Naff.

Having your DSE part numbers and my Jaycar part numbers helps people source what they want from the store in their area.
Now that you have had it in and working, do you still think we should find somewhere to pickup the 'ACC' for P1 ?

Jamie,

The Brissy girl says I'm a tourist and don't know anything emoticon
Seems she wants to go to Double Island Point when we are there and that the bush track to Rainbow Beach might be too rough for the Exy.
Have you had any trips to these places ?
(maybe we should take this trip discussion to another thread somewhere ?)

You can use "events" for this and plan your trip emoticon

P.S. This thread has now been linked to the DIY Guides section in our forum and the Main Site.

Re: Power Window Relay

Hi Kev,

When I get chance, I might compile a spreadsheet with all part numbers required from both Jaycar and/or DSE and have htat uploaded to the DYI.

As for the ACC; we can talk about where we might pick it up from for sure. Personally, I don't mind leaving it in its basic form. The main annoyance for me was the fact that I turned the car off and realised I had windows down. Sitting in the car for prolonged periods with the window down and radio on for example isn't going to bother me too much when I need to get out and lock up... if I have time to sit there in the first place, then a few extra seconds won't bother me too much. But that is my personal view. If others see the greater advantage of using the ACC, then we can make it an optional point in the DYI.

Re: Power Window Relay

Kev, I have not been to these places but if you start up a thread in events, I'll start looking around and see what I can find out and plan something. It will be good to go somewhere different. emoticon

As for the ACC, I don't feel it is necessary either because if you are sitting in the car for extended periods, usually you have the key in the ignition and a quick flick is all that is needed of the keys. My main hassle is that I switch off, take the keys out open the door and see the window open, that's when this mod will really come to be a benefit. Others may think differently though.

I'll look out in events for your post mate. emoticon

Re: Power Window Relay

I agree with Nath and this is my biggest hassle as well.

The optimal solution would of course be an auto window closing mechanism as soon as you take the key out of the ignition but I do realize there are safety concerns with such a method (especially for the little xtrailers at the back sticking their hands out)

Re: Power Window Relay

As it fits at the moment with the spade connectors into the relay socket and relay, it is a very easy connection and it covers 90% or more of the times its needed.

I agree, I don't think the effort will give any great benefit.

Re: Power Window Relay

Jamie,

I've got your circuit done emoticon
It has been raining down here today so plenty of time for indoor activities emoticon

If you want I can do the complete assembly or since you said the soldering was your weakpoint, I can supply it to you as a 'short-form' in the case without the wires and spade connectors for less than 1/2 the cost. Then you can screw the wires you make up according to the DIY into the screw terminals and your done.

What do you want me to bring ?
