Rev cut out?

The other night I was giving the Exy a bit of flat footedness, racing against my mate in a V6 camry.

Basically, I was hitting the red line pretty easily, as once over 5000 revs, the Exy just surges forward, and before you know it, you're over 6000 revs. (Love the 2nd set of intake runners!)

So my question is, where is the actual red line? I've heard it to be 6200 rpm. And if that is the red line (which I was exceeding!) where is the cut out? I found my previous cars to cut out right at the red line, but the Exy just didn't seem to.

I should also mention that its fun getting all four wheels to spin emoticon
I stopped it soon enough, because I thought I was hurting my nice newish Exy, and promised to look after it better...

Re: Rev cut out?

Hi Col,

The rev limiter for the 2006 models is indeed 6,200RPM

The rev limiter for pre-2006 models is 6,700RPM

The difference is due to the 9KW extra power in the pre-2006 models.

It is strongly advisable NOT to go above the rev limiter and stay there for long, as this will cause the balancer shafts to go bust.

Our engine has balancer shaft which rotate TWICE as fast as the engine RPM in the opposite direction to keep the engine block running smoothly with minimal vibration.

So, if you hit 6,200RPM, the balancer shafts will be rotating at 12,400RPM and you can only imagine what happens if you stir-up an egg/oil so fast emoticon

Your engine will be having a big doze of oil froth instead of real oil.

That is why I try not to do the 0-100kms and dyno runs very often, it is a huge load on the engine.

Re: Rev cut out?

Well its a bit hard to go above the rev limiter when it cuts out the fuel (most likely) or ignition to the engine.

But, yes very true what you say about the balancer shafts - although I think I've read somewhere about the balancer unit being able to withstand up to 20,000 to 25,000 revolutions before it rips itself apart.

Anyways, I only sit up high in the rev range when I'm dragging someone off at the lights, or I drop a gear to fly past someone. I think theres still a bit of hoon left in me from the old modified Hyundai, but the power of the Exy gets to my head a bit and I go a bit silly.

Probably a good idea to switch to the castrol sport oil soon if I'm going to be giving the Exy some heavy footness...

Re: Rev cut out?

According to THIS report:

quote:

The balance shafts themselves would be safe spinning past 20,000 rpm, according to the QR25's lead engineer, Shunichi Inamijima. The rest of the engine may fly apart, but the balance shafts would be fine.

That said, I hit the red line occasionally as well but not all the time, emoticon

I'd like to keep my engine in good condition for quite a number of years to come, emoticon

Re: Rev cut out?

Yes, its very irresponsible of me, and its left over from my days of racing stock cars around tracks.

I am doing my best to stop it!!! I don't want to hurt my Exy! But... peer pressure... you know.... emoticon

Sorry to dig-up an old thread but the question about turbo whine of the T31 diesel got me thinking as to what is the rev limiter is set to on the T31's (diesel and petrol).

Anyone tried revving up the engine? emoticon

Re: Rev cut out?

Thanks Scot, my guess it would be 6,200RPM like the Series II T30.

Yes you are correct cut out revs at 6,200 and would not go anymore.

Hope this helps and now Wendy is asking what that was in aid of emoticon
