Won't start - just ticks over

Hi

Just bought an '02 X-trail Ti, 45000km's on the clock, immaculate condition. Already had our first problem - won't start. Been running fine for a couple of days, now when i went to start it this morning after changing a headlight globe and inspecting the air filter element the damn thing just wouldn't start. Headlights, lights etc were all fine so i don't think it's a battery problem, might be an ECU issue or something?

Strange indeed.

I can't see the battery being the cause of the problem if the lights are not dim.

The air filter will have no impact on this either, even if you take it off, it should still start and fire-up OK.

Have you checked the MAF sensor connector and made sure it is in place? You might have knocked the MAF sensor connector harness by accident.

Otherwise, check the fuses in the engine bay, there is a fuse box with fuses called ENG1, ENG2 and ENG3, check these and make sure they're OK.

Because it is a second hand car, did you get the service history of it and made sure that it had all the recalls done?

All recalls are listed HERE

Turned out to be the key that we were using - one of the red dot ones that was programmed by the dealer. The factory key works fine, so it's the immobiliser. Will go to Nissan today and get the service history and see if they can fix up the immobiliser chip in the key.

I'm glad you found the cause of the problem. Looks like the gonna have to re-program the key for you.

Re: Won't start - just ticks over

Still haven't got to Nissan, but anyway this forum has helped me already! Did the "grille mesh" mod on the weekend to protect that poor, poor radiator with no protection! I can't believe how big that air dam gap is with no protection! There were a couple of slightly bent fins, nothing huge to worry about. Got some chrome alumininium mesh from Repco for about $30, cut it to the right size for the air dam and grille, slotted it in behind the bottom bumper bolts and cable tied it on to whatever i could find around to hold it. Looks great and hopefully protects that poor radiator.

Took it up for a spin to Wisemans yesterday, still getting used to how it performs on gravel (can anyone say wheelspin?)
