posticon Porous Gearbox housing

Anyone else got one - or ever heard of this?

Had a small oil leak from the gearbox area - after 2.5 years driving the Xtrail (TI auto). Very surprised since this car's been faultless. Took it to the dealer to check it out. They got a bit excited - had most of the service dept pawing over it. Told me that the leak is coming straight through the gearcase housing. They call it a porous casting. (Learn something new every day!!)

Now they have to pull it apart. emoticon

oh well - at least it'll get washed again

See ya, emoticon

Re: Porous Gearbox housing

I've seen it before in an older car, not a big leak but over time wear and tear opens the holes up.

You should be able to get that covered by warranty if the car is only 2.5 years old, check with the dealership. 8(

Yep. It's definitely a warranty job. I guess it would be Nissan's problem even if it were out of warranty? Not much doubt about it being a manufacturing defect.

New gearbox casing has to come from Japan - so we wait.

From the lack of responses it doesn't seem as if this is a very common problem though. Must have just got unlucky.

Not necessarily. I complained about a similar problem at my 30,000kms service and that I could see oil sweat marks around the gasket area of the gearbox. They inspected it and degreased it and told me to keep any eye on it but it never came back. I didn't reply to this thread because I wanted to check that again this weekend (almost 40,000kms later) and see if the oil marks are there.

Will report back this weekend.

I am out of warranty.

Re: Porous Gearbox housing

OK, I have bad news emoticon

Put the exy on the ramps this morning and went under to check the gearbox housing, at the front it was pretty dry and all seals seemed ok, but when I looked at the back of the gearbox at the point where it meets the shaft, it was pretty oily there and I can actually feel wet oil in that area, which can only suggest to me that it is leaking indeed.

I am up for my 70,000kms soon and will take it to the same dealer who inspected this leak at the 30K service and see what they say.

I am out of warranty, so it'll be interesting to see what they gonna come back with.

Check your gearboxes guys, as I have heard the same happen overseas for a number of xtrailers too.

Very sorry to hear that Jalal. Seems to me that if the gearbox casing is "sweating" Nissan would have to fix it for free. Has to be a manufacturing defect surely?

Good luck with them..

I will try my luck with that same dealership and at least they have it on record when I complained about leaks in the gearbox, so hopefully it'll be a warranty job too.

Just so I get a bit more ammunition to argue the case, can you please send me a PM with the dealership details who will be working on your car, so I can put my dealership in touch with them if they have any doubts?

Done. When the problem with mine is fixed, I'll be happy to put their details up here for all to see.

It's worth making sure that good work is reported I think. Far too many bad news stories these days. emoticon

Re: Porous Gearbox housing

Well I got the Xtrail (the Bug) back today. They replaced the gearbox casing, and all seems well so far. Have to check underneath for a while to be sure though.

Main North Nissan (Adelaide) found the problem, managed the repair with an unnamed transmission specialist company and lent me a loan car for the week.

No charge for anything - and they washed the Bug yet again.

I am very impressed with their level of service, and the way that they kept me up to date with progress. The $1,000 excess on the loan Nissan Tidler was a bit of a worry though.

So some good news about service for a change. Hope it all stays dry under there from now on though. emoticon

Interesting that they don't do their own transmission repairs though. Have dealers simply become clearinghouses for specialist companies? For instance brakes, clutch, diesel tuning, wheel alignment, glass replacement are all areas that I have heard of being done on behalf of Dealers by specialist companies.

I wonder which areas of car service are actually being completed inhouse by dealers.
Is it only the more trivial work?

In any event, so far I'm very happy with the work that has been completed and the Dealer's part in it.

Re: Porous Gearbox housing

Posted by Dunoon moved from another thread
=================================

At my recent service an oil leak was discovered. At this stage it is only a minor seepage but will need to be watched.

It is an oil seal to the auto gear box, between the gear box and the transfer box housing that are bolted together. There is a weep-hole that lets any oil out.

It is a major all-day job and I have been quoted $580. The seal is probably worth only a few dollars but it requires a lot of dismantling to get at it.

I have been told that the dealer has done two or three but that it is not common.

I was just wondering if any of our members has had this problem. If so, how bad did it get before it was fixed and what did it cost?

PS: I am still on my original brake pads and they still have life left in them!
