Cruise Control

I have just purchased an x-trail second hand. 2005 Ti'L - auto. Took it for our first run to Melbourne from the North East of Vic. recently. Went very well. When in Cruise control through the hills on the Hume (Great Divide), it would drop down a gear our two to maintain the speed. It would not do this slowly as I expected. Seemed too severe. Other cars I have driven with cruise would maintain speed without the need to drop down. I finished up turning it off and used it only on the flat. Is this normal or do I need to get it checked out? Also can anyone tell me if I am covered by the Nissan 24 hr Road Side Assist. Or does this only apply to new car buyers. I was going to get some RACV cover but won't bother if this applying while under warrantee. We have only had the car two weeks and have nearly worn her out. Very clever vehicle. Our property backs on to the Stanley State Forest. Amazing where we can visit. Some of my mates with the bigger 4X4's are also impressed.

Thanks for any advice - Cheers

Re: Cruise Control

Gear hunting on a steep hill climb is normal for the exy as it is only a 4 cylinder car. I usually turn-off the cruise control when approaching a steep hill climb as I find that I can better control the acceleration manually. It is better for fuel economy too, rather than letting the exy rev up and down trying to select the right gear.

My understanding in regards to the 24 road side assistance is that it is transferable with the car if it is still under warranty.

Make sure you notify Nissan Australia head office in Melbourne of the ownership change, so your name gets added against the VIN in their database for any future correspondence.

Re: Cruise Control

when i use cruise control on steep uphill sections.. i turn off the overdrive. still keeps the revs around 3000 at ~100kph, and stops it hunting. it also says to do this somewhere in the owners manual.

Re: Cruise Control

Have had the fly-by-wire auscruise for some time now. It has a gentler reaction to speed changes - advantage: you just get back to 40kph then hit the resume button and it brings the vehicle up to speed at a reasonable pace. Disadvantege: on a hill it will let you slow down about 5-7 kph then try to catch up. On several of the hills on the Calder this means it drops a cog and zooms over the top of the hill at about 10 kph over what you set. I find that cutting out the overdrive as I start on the hill resolves this, and I think keeps the engine in a better power band.
Stillfor the driving we do wouldn'tbe without cruise now.

Re: Cruise Control

On steep hills with cruise on, where I know or expect it will kick down, I press the accelerator pedal a little to give it more fuel. Normally the car will retain its speed (or accelerate) without it kicking down. When over the hill take your foot off and its still in cruise.

Really?? I am sure my cruise disengages if I touch either the brake or accelerator. I thought that was a safety requirement of any cruise control system?

The factory cruise control cancels out when you touch the brakes (or the ABS sensors detect slippage of the front wheels in 4WD-AUTO mode). Mine is an automatic; perhaps with manual transmission it detects either brake or acelerator pedals? I don't see why they would bother though. I can accelerate past the set speed with cruise control turned on, and when I back off it gradually decelerates to the set speed again.

I have the same problem as DavidM - that it flies over the top of hills about 10k's over it's set limit.

Re: Cruise Control

Mine is an automatic and has only ever cancelled the cruise with the brake, or when at high speed, driving through puddles, which causes a little slippage.
